Independent Olympic Participant

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Independent Olympic Participant is a term used in the Olympic Games to denote a team or individual who is competing without national representation, either because their country of origin is not recognized or is banned. The IOC country code IOP is used to identify these athletes. During the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain, Yugoslavia was under United Nations sanctions which prevented the country from taking part in the Olympics. However, individual Yugoslav athletes were allowed to take part as Independent Olympic Participants.
