I hope you have enough knowledge about India and can contribute towards improving this map. This discussion is for the most part about detailed map I will be uploading after I finish this map. I will only work on detailed map after this map is over. Since I do not want to waste any effort on making a wrong or unacceptable map, I am discussing in advance. Go through this list and you will see enough information about the current map too. The detailed map will not be any different from this map except that the labels will be smaller and hence more of them can be added to that map.

For the detailed map I will include these cities:

  • Ports (ALL of them with names in water - as suggested):
    • Puri
    • Vishakhapatnam
    • Pondicherry
    • Tuticorin
    • Thiruvananthpuram
    • Kochi
    • Panaaji
    • Surat
  • Metropolitan Cities (larger black dotes):
    • Mumbai
    • Kolkata (for LordSurya.. I always spoke Kolkota and Culcutta was a typo)
    • Chennai (Chenai was not a typo but I was confused for a second - should have checked)
    • Bangalore
    • Ahmedabad

If you do not want me to label them as metropolitan please let me know. On the thumbnailable map the cities are shown as normal cities.

  • Other cities (Going from north to South):
    • Srinagar
    • Jammu
    • Amritsar
    • Shimla
    • Chandigarh
    • Dehra Dun
    • Karnal
    • New Delhi
    • Guwahati
    • Bikaner
    • Jaipur
    • Agra
    • Lucknow
    • Gwalior
    • Allahabad
    • Patna
    • Bhopal
    • Ahmedabad
    • Ranchi
    • Rajkot
    • Indore
    • Raipur
    • Nagpur
    • Pune
    • Coimbatore

If you think I missed an important city please let me know. I might have missed some Southern and Eastern cities. From the CIA map I have excluded a few cities Kandla, Haldia, Imphal, Madurai & Calicut . If you want me to add the dash over top of long a for the long aa sound please let me know (as in Kāveri). I am not doing that otherwise - I will make more spelling mistakes with this extra vowel ā.

  • Rivers
    • Ganga (Ganges) (as suggested) & Yamuna
    • Indus (Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi Satluj??? - that will get messy)
    • Bhramputra (Tsang Po) (I'll check spelling)
    • Mahanadi
    • Godavari
    • Krishna
    • Kaveri
    • Narmada (and Tapti??)

  • Islands (any change is possible but I do not understand the darken bit)
    • Lakshwadeep (Lacadives)
    • Andaman and Nicobar Islands (not separately as in CIA map)
  • Mountains
    • K2 (Godwin Austin)
    • Kanchenjunga
    • Nanga Parbat
    • Nanda Devi
  • Tropic of Cancer through India
  • Geology
    • Thar Desert (as suggested - but not in the thumbnail map - lack of space)
    • Leh (I will add cold desert if you want)
    • Deccan Plateau (not on the thumbnail - same reason)
    • Himalya’s (If I can get the font to curve a bit using GIMP I'll try that)
  • Outside India
    • China to People's Republic of China (Are you sure? I am not inclined to do it)
    • LoC and LoAC - I'll try some other colour
    • Tibet
    • International capital cities (space permitting)

No lakes or mountain ranges - unless you want.

Finally I must mention Nichalp's name. My effort on the map was inspired by his single handed handling of comments and criticism on the Featured article page. I'll still not vote though, since I am Indian and my views can not be NPOV. I wanted to improve the article but it was blocked. The problem had to be solved. --Ankur 00:23, 13 Sep 2004 (UTC)

I don't know if you really want to name individual mountains. Obviously, one has to name the Himalayas (which name, incidentally, would benefit greatly from your writing it as 'Himā.layas')... what about the Vindya mountains? Those are pretty important in an Indian context... I mean, they're more important to Indians than the Brahmaputra (which is primarily in China). --LordSuryaofShropshire 05:06, Sep 13, 2004 (UTC)

Ok, forget the mountains. I just wanted to add them since at least one mountain was depicted in the CIA version of the map. Now about Vindhya range, I am of North Indian origin. Pardon my lack of knowledge on the topic, I do not know anything about the Vindhya range - except that I have heard of it (esp in the national anthem of India.) Which proves the point that while the Vindhya range might be of importance to people from one part of India and Brahmaputra of little importance. For people from the other part it may be exactly the opposite. Anyway if you will just tell me where to write Vindhya I will write it or maybe I will look up on the net. Thanks for your inputs. ... I've read quite a bit now and I think I can put the name down on map. I am in favour of writing the Himalayas down using the transliteration you provide. I mean this is the English Wikipedia - you don't want to confuse people. We want to write in English here. If you want I will use 'Himālayas' (not 'Himā.layas'), but if we do that, then I think this should be done for all names in the map. --Ankur 10:55, 13 Sep 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Some suggestions

Thanks for your kind words. Anyways, what you are doing is great! This map is fine, it looks great by the way. However I would suggest that you do not add the cities, rivers, lakes to this map. It would look too crowded, and the beauty of this map would be lost. I mentioned that Chandigarh and Guwahati to be added as those areas are currently devoid of any cities on the map.

Since you have wisely put everything in layers, I would suggest that two more maps be created, one to add all the cities and the other to address the physical features. I don't think that it would be asking too much of you would it? [If Jiang doesn't have a problem with China, I too would not. :)] The area of the A&N islands and Laksh. islands are a little hard to pick out if you thumbnail the pix. I suggest you darken the borders of the islands somewhat so that it is more easily visible. [[User:Nichalp|¶ ɳȉčḩåḽṗ | ]] 19:49, Sep 13, 2004 (UTC)

I have made most changes that you guys asked for. I deleted all labels and rewrote them to include Thar Desert, Deccan Plateau', Chandigarh, Guwahati. I have added Rann of Kutch. I took Leh out - I thought the cold desert of Ladakh is called Leh (like the city.) I was wrong and I can not find the name, forget it anyway. About Andaman, if I darken either the border or the land of the islands, they will have a different colour from rest of India. I have Increased the thumbnail width from 300->327 (width matches CIA's map's width) maybe you can see them better now? What I will try though is trying the sharpen tool on boundry. About Jiang's suggestion of changing LOC, LAC colour for better contrast - I tried some other colours but they did not work well. On my screen the line is clearly visible. If you still want me to make change the colour, let me know.
Finally, I did not want to add those cities to this version of the map. I want to use this map as ground work for adding more cities. It wont affect the map because I will use much smaller font. I have no problem with another map for Physical feature. But if such a map can be found on the internet I only need to add the boundaries. :-) --Ankur 02:47, 14 Sep 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Image Protection

Why isn't this image protected? The map is one of the things that's being disputed in the India page (which remains protected).

[edit] Lakshadweep is spelled wrong

It should be Lakshadweep and not Lakshwadeep. Please correct this.
