Firefly costume designer Shawna Trpcic designed this logo to appear with the star pointing up, which is how it usually appears in the series. However, a set dresser accidentally put it upside down in some scenes. As a result of this mixup, the symbol appears with the star pointing both up and down in fan-produced media and merchandise, even though the original intent was for it to point up.

I cannot find a good source as to why, but many seem to believe the correct color for the star is Blue, not Black. -- TC

Even if this rendering of the flag was created by a Wikipedia user, the company responsible for producing Firefly retains its copyright. Any use of this image on Wikipedia must be in compliance with fair use policy, which prohibits its use outside of the main article space (a la userbox) and requires a detailed fair use rationale.
