IND Worth Street Line

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The IND Worth Street Line was a rapid transit line planned as part of the IND Second System in the early 20th century. The Second System is a planned network of lines and extensions that has not come into fruition due to fiscal and political crises. The Second Avenue Subway is another part of the Second System.

The IND Worth Street Line was envisioned as part of the IND Eighth Avenue Line. The line will come out of the main line south of Canal Street and would turn south-east into Worth Street. The new route will stop at Foley Square (Lafayette and Centre Streets, adjacent to the Federal Plaza), Chatham Square (with a possible connection to the Second Avenue Subway), Rutgers Street-East Broadway (with a connection to the IND Rutgers Street Line), a station in the Lower East Side (possibly Pitt Street and Grand Street), Havemeyer Street, South 4th Street (connections to the IND Crosstown Line and a major junction to the IND Houston Street Line, the IND Utica Ave Line and a connection to the Rockaways). Vestiges of a bellmouth can be seen while travelling on the local tracks south of Canal Street. A large space above the platform level at East Broadway (IND Sixth Avenue Line) was intended to become a 2 track station and above Broadway (IND Crosstown Line) a 6 track station can be envisioned.
