== The story of Indian TV series==
Early Days
Indian television viewers had for many years limited exposure to television series. The early ones that come to mind for a viewer in Mumbai were mainly in English and included I Love Lucy, Telematches, Pride and Prejudice. The Indian originating series were limited and included: Aao Mare Saathe, Phool Khile Hai Gulshan Gulshan, Tele Go Round Chhayya Geet. While these were weekly shows, they were not drama series, they were talk shows, game shows and weekly round ups and were mainly on state owned broadcaster Doordarshan.
Doordarshan's dominance would continue for two decades more until satellite TV would make its debut in India. Amongst the first major family drama series to make a national impact was Hum Log penned Manohar Shyam Joshi. It traced the travails of a traditional Indian family over the years. The other big big series was Buniyaad which followed a familiy's fortunes and misfortunes on account of the partition of India into India and Pakistan by the British. Other series followed quickly right from Nukkad to Mahabharata to Ramayana to the dubbed animated series Jungle Book.
