The Incredible Hulk Coaster is a steel roller coaster located in Universal's Islands of Adventure in Orlando, Florida. It is named for the popular comic book superhero character, the Hulk. Voted the #1 roller coaster by Discovery Channel viewers in 1999, the roller coaster is unique because it features a launch lift hill as opposed to conventional chain lifts. This means the train accelerates to 40 mph (18 m/s) in a short time (approximately two seconds) before speeding through several inversions.

The Incredible Hulk is the only launched roller coaster ever produced by Bolliger & Mabillard. As a company, they are opposed to launched coasters because of perceived reliability problems, so they subcontracted the launch mechanism to another company.

The roller coaster was featured at the beginning of the film House on Haunted Hill.

[edit] The Ride

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

At the beginning of the ride, you are seen to be entering Project Gamma. You hear Bruce Banner's voice in the middle saying how he thought the calculations were perfect and this time they've gone wrong. At the end of his sentence, you are shot out within 2 seconds at 40 mph. You are then sent through a small twist and sent down a 105 foot drop and sent through 2 corkscrews. They then put you through an underground room full of mist, which you then shoot up again to another corkscrew. By now, your speed has reached close to 65-67 mph. Now you are put up another lift hill and slowed down at the top before being sent down another hill to a corkscrew. You are then riding sideways through a camera area and then to the rides closing.

Spoilers end here.

[edit] Criticism

  • The coaster has been criticized for its relatively “boring” second half, but still remains one of the top rated coasters in the US.
