[edit] Imroy
I guess I should put some info here.
By the way, my 'nick' doesn't mean what you probably think it means. If you want to address me by my real name, you can call me Ian.
[edit] Interests
Imroy at a glance
|
- Unix and Linux; I've been using Linux as my sole workstation and server OS since early 1996. I administer my family's small network with several Linux servers and Windows desktops.
- Computer graphics; Ray tracing mostly, the more realistic the better. I've used Greg J. Ward's Radiance package for many years now. I especially don't like scan-line renderers like REYES.
- Photography; Overlapping with CG in some ways. I have an old 1.3MP digital camera (Kodak DC240) and a manual 35mm camera (Ricoh KR-5 super II) I bought off eBay last year. I used to use my father's 4MP Olympus C750Z but don't have much need for it now. In the last few years I started using PanoTools and hugin to make stitched panoramic photos. I recently got a fisheye lens for my 35mm camera so that I can photograph larger areas quickly. Some day I'd like to move up to medium format with a cheap Kiev camera.

- Programming; Mainly C/C++ and Perl nowadays. In my younger years I started on BASIC and Logo. I started using Turbo Pascal around year 10 in high school. I also started using Turbo C++ in (IIRC) year 11 or 12, but didn't get very far with it. I learnt C and C++ properly in University and it was around that time that I found DJGPP, a port of the GNU tools to DOS. I was also pretty good with x86 assembly in Uni, and the MIPS-like architecture described by Patterson and Hennessy. I guess I know a fair bit about the inner workings of CPU's.
[edit] Major contributions
Some of my larger contributions (in reverse order):
[edit] 2007
- Merge selenium toning and part of sepia tone into photographic print toning. Added some info from an Ilford document about toning
- Create Ilford HP article, including box artwork
- Uploaded low-resolution scans of box artwork for use on Velvia, Provia, and Ilford Delta
- Reformat the list of ingredients in E-6 process into two tables
- Bit of a cleanup of Razer USA Ltd and Windows key. I guess gamers aren't that good at writing.
- Create Ilford Delta and Ilford SFX articles
- Make a history section in Ilford Photo and add more history info
- A fair bit of work on Fujifilm Superia
- Copyedit on Mirror lock-up with lots of explanitory text
- Helped cope with all the vandalism on the Peter Overton article encouraged by Chris and Craig on their radio show
- More edits to Kiev-Arsenal (photo camera)
- Copyedit of Unix file types
- Mention the flammability of nitrocellulose photographic film
[edit] 2006
- Edited the 'Concerns over usage of deviantART' section in DeviantART
- Copyedited Linux color management. It still needs more work.
- Converted a whole bunch of "external" links to wikibooks.org in List of recipes into interwiki links.
- Reworded the second-person speech in Lego pneumatics.
- A copyedit of Pentax K10D
- Did a fairly big rearrangement of Accelerated Graphics Port involving converting a list to several paragraphs of text.
- Cleaned up Science of photography. More work needs to be done.
- Created Template:Infobox Photographic film, as suggested on Talk:List of photographic films. Added it to a bunch of photographic film articles. Hopefully this will encourage people to add more information, because some of the older films didn't have much.
- Cleaned up the wording about the advantages of Single-lens reflex cameras.
- Cleaned up some of Kodachrome, particularly the section on scanning.
- Trying to clean up Damn Small Linux after it was listed for deletion.
- Moved GLEW to OpenGL Extension Wrangler Library and made glew a disambig page with the non-OpenGL information.
- Cleaned up much of Gumstix.
- Found the press releases on dpreview.com that were referred to on Super CCD and added them as links.
- Cleaned up the 'process history' section of Ektachrome.
- Disambiguated many "Polaroid" links to Polaroid Corporation.
- Experimented with the layout of Template:The Crow and tweaked its placement in several articles.
- Cleaned up some of the wording in Technical Pan.
- A pretty big clean up of Google Sitemaps.
- Helped tidy up Mamiya C220 and Mamiya C330.
- Changed the wording of much of Concert Etiquette to be in the third person. Also cleaned up some formatting and added many links.
- "Merged" much of Night photography tips into Night photography in a more encyclopedic tone. Also added a 'Subjects' section.
- Converted two HTML tables in Barcode to MediaWiki table format.
- Did a pretty big clean up of the wording in CPU shim.
- Converted the large table in Wratten number to the MediaWiki table format.
- Moved content from Ilford about the photographic company into its own article - Ilford (company). Added a list of products and uploaded a logo for the page.
- Added several new section's worth of information to Subversion (software). I'm using it as the storage back-end for my own Wiki engine and I've learnt a fair bit about the internals.
- Broke up the large amount of text in Photographic lens into a few more sections.
- Made the intro to Packet writing to be less Windows-specific. Drive letters... *groan*
- Rewrote all of Lines of resolution. I came across the article a while ago, it was basically one guy's rant against the use of the term.
- Filled out the information about Digital Television in Radio.
- Broke up the long list of software in WebDAV.
- Cleaned up Pinhead mirror.
- A pretty big rearrangement on 120 film. I broke it into sections, moved a good chunk of info into an easy-to-read table, and moved text around to better match the sections.
- Also broke up UltraSPARC T1 into sections. I later rewrote the section about its use of cache because another user thought it biased.
- Add a good chunk of text to FastCGI about the advantages it has over emebedded interpreters (mod_perl, etc).
- Broke up This Sporting Life (radio program) into sections and did a fair bit of restructuring and reformatting.
- Filled out the Fujifilm section of List of photographic films from datasheets.
- Merged Film scanning into Film scanner and made the first a redirect to the second. Now I need a generic name to use for Digital ICE and other similar technologies.
- Started the Radiance (software) page. Yay! My first page.
- Toned down some statements added to Velvia. I've since made a number of edits, improving the layout and wording.
- Helped fill out a fair bit of info on Pentax K mount.
- Made some small changes to Maksutov telescope to make it look more like Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope.
- Added a few chunks to Moties. I need to find my copy of The Mote in God's Eye.
- Went through and fixed a whole bunch of occurences of the incorrect term 'X windows'.
[edit] 2005
- Made the big tables on DX encoding.
- Found a quote to add to Shihad.
- Cleaned up Modular Weapon after my younger brother started the article.
- Added a fair bit of info on Kiev-Arsenal (photo camera). Oh how I want one of those Arax cameras...
- Added info to Lens mount about bayonet lens mounts.
- Added info to Jay and the Doctor about their on-air antics.
[edit] 2004
- Added a large chunk of info to Rage (TV program). I'm pleased to see a lot of it still there in one form or another.
[edit] Things I generally watch out for
- I've noticed that I don't like long pieces of text in parentheses. I usually either add a comma to continue the sentence, or start a new sentence. Only little notes should be in parentheses.
- As a native english speaker I do sometimes clean up text that appears to be written by someone having difficulty with the language. I've done this a few times for whole news stories over on WikiNews.
- Do the usual anti-vandalism things. I often keep an eye on my watchlist and check all of them. And don't forget to go look at their 'contributions' to see what else they might have done. I've caught quite a few vandals and link spammers, and helped clean up after them.
- Americanisms. Yes, I try to respect the rules about American/British spellings even though it annoys me no end to often see colour spelt without a 'u'. But lately I've been fixing the spelling of metric units, like "meter" instead of metre or the term "metric ton" instead of simply tonne. Hopefully it's acceptable to most Americans for these foreign words to use the international spelling.
