[edit] Strange Aircraft
Thanks Impi, that was the aircraft, although when it flew straight over me it look smaller than the DC-3, must have been the bad light and the wing tips that threw me. All I had was the front and underneath view. Thanks --Jcw69 11:36, 7 May 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Vandalism of History of South Africa in the apartheid era went undetected.
Hi -- I just noticed that some wholesale vandalism of the History of South Africa in the apartheid era a couple of days ago went undetected until today. An anon replaced the entire text of the article with the old text of the Apartheid article, including the bit about "diaspora Jews." Since this seems to have slipped under everyone's radar (including mine), and I don't know who has History of South Africa in the apartheid era on their watchlist, I thought I'd give you a heads up. --Bcrowell 18:27, 30 July 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Aircraft specifications survey
Hi again Impi! Of late, there's been pressure from a few directions to revise the standard specifications section thrashed out last year. You may be interested in a survey currently underway to help resolve some of the issues. --Rlandmann 00:20, 18 July 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Military template
OK, that looks fine now- I previously didn't like the mix of flags and emblems as it was rather messy. I know the NZ one is a mix, but the images were more clear. Astrotrain 14:54, August 21, 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Hoe gaan dit?
Groete, Impi! Ok, enough Afrikaans, I just thought I'd drop a line to say, as a fellow South African, great work on all those SAAF pages, me and another S.A. aviation person am in the process of expanding a few. Cheers! Banes 13:43, 1 September 2005 (UTC)
- Ja, the other bloke would be me, but really, I haven't done that much yet, just beefed up the history of AFB Ysterplaat, and added a pic. Just thought I'd add my two cents worth here!--Xiphon 16:47, 6 September 2005 (UTC)
[edit] SA-mil-stub
Hi there. There's concern at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Discoveries that {{SA-mil-stub}} may be distinctly underpopulated to have been "split" from {{mil-stub}} at present, you might want to comment there. I can tell by your user page (and indeed, your user name!) the topic's obviously one you're interested in and knowledgeable about, so I'm sure you're in at least as good a position as any of us to estimate the likely current population of such stubs. [edit] Support

[edit] No Worries
First off, thanks for the template help, and here is your free (terms and conditions apply) wikithanks, as agreed. Believe it or not, having figured out how to create a nice little template, I couldn't figure out the colour scheme (having no experience in html), so I copied it from someone else's, and somehow managed to transform it from a nice mauve sort of colour into that awful brownish affair. No worries about the talk page thingy, I actually hadn't taken offence, we're all busy people. Seeing as you appear to be a big stick in the SA Air Force department of wikipedia, could you assist me with one other thing. I'm in the process of writing about AFB Langebaanweg, which is home to the following squadrons/units: CFS (including Silver Falcons), 80 ANS, 8 ASU (Aircraft Servicing Unit), 400 AMU and 526 Protection Sqn. SOme of those have pages of their own, courtesy of yourself, but others are just red links. So if you could find the time to write something about them I'd appreciate it. Thanks again--Xiphon 15:49, 14 October 2005 (UTC)
PS- What on earth is a kfir?
- Really? They must have moved within the past two years then, or else my sources are wrong. Funny enough I just finished reading the book about the Israeli's stealing the Mirage plans for their own designs, but it never named the Kfir as the aircraft they subsequently went on to build, so I have learned something new. One final issue is that I don't have any of my own images of Langebaanweg, I would have to scan some from print sources, which is questionable at best. I'm hoping that either you have some or you know of a site where we could acquire them--Xiphon 18:43, 14 October 2005 (UTC)
Confession time - Hello again Impi. Unfortunately I haven't been able to complete the Langebaanweg article before the weekend as I had hoped, and seeing as I'm writing exams for the next few weeks it isn't likely to be completed in a hurry either. I've written most of the history and drafted out the layout in notepad, but I'd be happy to move it to a subpage of mine for you to work on if you get impatient. Otherwise I'll work on it in my spare time (about as few and far between as black eskimos), and play it by ear. My sincere aplogies if you've been working hard on the link articles, but I reiterate, I'm happy to make my work available if you have a deadline. Oh PS, I may have found a source for images, which I'm enthusiastically exploring. Cheers for now--Xiphon 17:40, 16 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] SANDF template
The SANDF template looks really good, but unfortunately there are JPEG artifacts in the emblems. I don't have time to fix it up myself (I'm writing matric) but if you can't do it, remind me sometime in December and I'd be glad to. --Taejo | Talk]] 17:55, 16 October 2005 (UTC)

Hi Impi, thanks for the "welcome back" ... hopefully I can "stay in the green zone" from now on as well ...Wikipedia does get addictive and I sorely missed it and contributing to the world's knowledge about South Africa. Elf-friend 07:53, 20 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Dear Impi
Please be advised that a plot to steal a WWII German enigma machine was under way, but travel to Europe is just so expensive! I did beat you in one way though, there are actually no 1's in the cipher, a=3 and z=28. So where you wrote 1 for y, it should actually be 27. Why stop at 25 I ask myself? I am pleased to see we managed to keep you off the street for an evening. Yes, most hot, a welcome relief from trigonometry, which is decidedly not hot. Anyway, it's been fun, I guess I'll just have to switch over to a secure e-mail line to discuss my future endevours, cc to yourself of course.--Xiphon 10:47, 31 October 2005 (UTC)
- Hey Impi, I'm rather impressed too by your decoding! In only 30 minutes, thats quite something. Hey, are you CIA (said with low suspicious sounding gutteral grunt)? Since I havnt taken the time to decode what you typed, was it ...You lucky bastard..., or was it the latter which Xiphon claimed on my talk page? Hee hee, nice line. If you could send those tips I saw you offered on Xiphon's page that would be sincerely appreciated (I know, I'm hijacking a thread which should be done by Xiphon). As occasionally Xiphon and I like to exchange some inane gossip which doesnt regard our fellow wikipedians! Cheers Banes 17:01, 31 October 2005 (UTC)
Actually, just to compare notes briefly, I should very much like to know how you did it. I realised pretty quickly that a single number, such as 3, could only be a, I or u (as a corrupted you), and provided that you knew that the code was sequential, one could just plug in those letters and break it by trial-and-error. Note that in the first message I broadcast, nowhere did I use a single number (a giveaway, not picked up by Banes tragically). One other question I'm just dying to ask, were the details of my lucky break worth half an hour?--Xiphon (again)
Thanks for the compliment, although all credit goes to Xiphon for inventing it (my contribution invloved asking questions which required the code). Banes 17:51, 31 October 2005 (UTC)
-
- Impi, there's no way in hell you'll break the new code...
From Banes: No there isnt......If you did, you'd be a freaking genius....(my 2 cents worth).
[edit] Good Luck!!
Good luck for your exam tomorrow. Hopefully it will go better than today's maths paper two HG went for us Matrics. May I ask what you are studying? From--Xiphon (and Banes if he knew about this message)
- (Banes just wikistalked Xiphon and found this thread)I echo the above. Good luck and all the best! Banes 21:05, 3 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Meteor Missile and F(/A) 22 designation
I have no objection to you reverting the changes that I made to the links regarding the F-22 raptor, however, please have the courtesy to observe the ongoing debate on the talk page of this article. Regards, --The1exile 22:47, 28 December 2005 (UTC)
- Impi, in response to your comments on my talk page, the discussion is over whether dropping the A is official. Therefore, if this is disputed it is not as clearcut as saying, to quote your example, "the sky is green" when it is not. And please, if you can back up your assertion, do so, because I can only find one source that mentions this in a press conference and yet I have found little or no mention of this in other, more reputable news sources (i.e., ABC news) that covered the same press conference. Regards, --The1exile 23:18, 28 December 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Bob Kershaw
Hi, I dug up a little bit of info on Bob Kershaw, mostly because he appeared on a SA stamp, but there is not much online. Perhaps you have additional sources? Kershaw's obit alluded to James Ambrose Brown's official history, for instance. Also, his squadron leader Jack Frost was an (unfortunately short-lived) ace and might be interesting material for a bio too. Stan 21:07, 30 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Image Tagging Image:XH-1 Alpha.jpg
|
Thanks for uploading Image:XH-1 Alpha.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{GFDL}} to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as {{fairusein|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. [edit] South African Border War
Thanks for your compliment regarding the South African Border War and the military unit articles :-). It also bothered me that there was virtually no coverage of what was an important phase in South Africa's history, especially for those who fought in it.
I get my information from all over the Internet, but the following sites have been especially helpful:
- The South African Military History Society - Tons of interesting stuff, both about the units and the various wars that they fought in.
- Regiments.org - Info about a lot of regiments, but the amount of information available on each varies greatly.
- exe?MenuItem=UnitInfo&UnitID=431 SA Military Unit info from a Stellenbosch University server; this seems to have moved to [1] but I am having problems accessing this site as well - As above, the amount of info on each regiment varies and can sometimes be a bit confusing.
The individual websites of some of the regiments have also been useful, but unfortunately not that many of them have one :-(.
Thanks for the good wishes and a special thanks for your vote!
Kindest Regards, Elf-friend 11:02, 14 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Hi!
Hey, I see you're also 21 from Joburg :) Where'd you go to school? I'm just getting into wikipedia... I suspect it might take over my life! Joziboy 3 March 2006, 14:01 (UTC)
Ah cool, a lot of people I went to primary school with went to St Johns. I was at Crawford (after a brief stint at boarding school in the Eastern Cape). What's the degree like at Wits? I often think I should've gone there - I pretty much focus entirely on African politics anyways. Plus trying to teach yourself Zulu in Scotland is surprisingly difficult! Although I do love it here, and hopefully I'm broadening the horizons of the academics here :) Joziboy 4 March 2006, 10:15 (UTC)
[edit] Impressive
Hi, for someone who was not born yet at the tine of the 1976 Soweto uprising, I am impressed that it was left to you to create the article on Apartheid. Do you know what ELXLE is? Regards Gregorydavid 08:27, 10 March 2006 (UTC)
- Hi, I do have specs on order .. I see now you said you contribute to the article on Apartheid.
- ELXLE is an acronym used in artillery to line up the gun. It represents the ritual the gunner, I think number three in the case of the 25 pounder, goes through to follow the aiming instructions given to him by number one as follows: Elevation (the handwheel), Line (rotating the gun on its platform to pick up the gun aiming point (GAP) somwhere behind the battery}, X (to adjust the bubble on the sight so that the sight is vertical), Line and Elevation again. So now you can aim a gun. Remember ELXLE
