The Improvement and Development Agency for local government (I&DeA or IDeA for short) was formed in 1998. It sits under the Local Government Association (LGA), and is funded by a mix of 'top-sliced' Revenue Support Grant (RSG) from the LGA, grant funding from government departments, and fee income from chargeable services.

The IDeA works in partnership with all councils in England and Wales, to enhance the performance of the best, accelerate the speed of improvement of the rest, and develop the sector as a whole.

The IDeA Knowledge website [1] delivers forward-thinking and in-depth content on improvement issues, shares examples of good practice from councils across England and Wales, and provides information on the IDeA’s range of tools and services. IDeA Knowledge aims to stimulate and support self-sustaining improvement within local government.
