[edit] History

IPW was formed in 2003 by a core group of wrestlers who left the now-defunct Mania Pro Wrestling.

Within two months, the new promotion had a name and a booking.

Though Fightclub ceased operations at Armageddon in 2003, IPW has since become a staple of the Armageddon scene, proving to be popular with organisers and punters alike. The promotion has been featured at the pop culture event every year since 2002.

[edit] House shows

With the acquisition of a new ring and training facilities, IPW was prepared to achieve its first goal of running regular house shows in the Auckland area. Beginning with Genesis at Pt. Chevalier in May 2004, IPW has staged monthly shows in central Auckland. IPW has also taken its show on the road, hosting NZWPW at Capital Punishment in Wellington in March 2006.

IPW enjoyed rousing success when it presented Coastal Assault in October 2006 at Stanmore Bay on the Hibiscus Coast, the North Auckland town which is home to "The One" Vinny Dunn.

IPW made its Whangarei debut on February 10, 2007, staging Collision at the Forum North venue. IPW colour commentator and NZPWI.co.nz Editor Dion McCracken, who was instrumental in bringing IPW to Northland, made a guest appearance during the show as a referee, officiating in the match between "The Deal" Dal Knox and "Handsome" Danny Jacobs. Notable New Zealand wrestler of yesteryear Jock Ruddock was present in the live audience.

[edit] TV deal

IPW recently secured a TV deal with Auckland's Alt TV. IPW New Year's Bash on 20 January 2007 was the first TV taping.[citation needed]

With Alt TV debuting recently on SKY Television this will be the first time in some 20 years that local wrestling has been seen on nationwide TV.[citation needed] The show called IPW Ignition airs at 12 am Friday night/Saturday morning.

[edit] Armageddon Cup

This trophy is fought for only at the Armageddon Conventions that run alternately in Auckland and Wellington. The first Armageddon Cup winner was determined by way of a battle royal featuring wrestlers from IPW and the then-fledgling NZWPW promotion. The Economist became the first Armageddon Cup champion by eliminating Joey Kinkade from the match.

At subsequent Armageddon events, the Armageddon Cup has been challenged for in a variety of ways, most often by way of a single elimination tournament format which is held over the course of one or two days. On the first day of the Wellington 2006 Armageddon event, "The One" Vinny Dunn won a tournament to win his first Armageddon Cup championship. He was defeated in a singles match the very next day, losing the trophy to the luchador sensation Halo.

The original Armageddon Cup trophy was destroyed during the reign of Jordan Invincible. It has since been replaced with a sturdier cup design.

[edit] Trivia

  • IPW stars Alexander and Ricky DeVinal appeared in a 2006 TV commercial for Primo, a brand of flavoured milk popular in New Zealand[citation needed]
  • IPW colour commentator Dion McCracken is a legitimate black belt in Tae Kwon Do. He delivered a knockout kick to IPW wrestler "Handsome" Danny Jacobs at the 2006 NZPWI Invitational, an event promoted by McCracken himself.[citation needed]
  • Auckland's Avondale College is a high contributor to IPW's human resources. Current wrestlers Jon E. King, Alfred Valentine and Alexander, as well as senior referee Leighton Cox and former wrestlers Dark Side and "Superstar" Troy Daniels are all Avondale College alumni. MPW staged a show at Avondale College in September 2001 which was headlined by a hardcore match between Daddy Kool and The Machine.[citation needed]
  • "Double D" Davey Deluxeo appeared with WWE World Heavyweight Champion Dave Batista in Auckland's Central Leader newspaper ahead of the 2007 WWE Road to WrestleMania 23 tour. This marked an IPW wrestler's first official interaction with an active WWE superstar since MPW hosted former WWE Champion John "Bradshaw" Layfield for a morning in 2002.
