[edit] Concerning your user page and talk page

Hi! Your user and talk page is totally in your control. You can do whatever you want with them! There are also things called userboxes you can put in them, which tell about yourself and things you like, wikipedia projects that you're involved in, etc. You kind find them on this page: Wikipedia:Userboxes. Feel free to check out my user and talk pages, and feel free to ask any questions! Filmcom 15:39, 24 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Past help issues

Theirs somat missing from some pages. I was reaserching what the ph "rating" for sugar was, and i was a bit surprised that wikipedia dosen't have it. 1. Does anyone know what the ph scale for:

nitric acid,
bleach,
sugar and
sodium hydroxide

2. Don't you think it would be useful for wikipedia to have it in the related infoboxes?

  • Well, sugar, like many things, is neither an acid or a base, and mentioning in all of those things that it has pH 7 isn't useful. Also, a material does not have a unique pH; it depends on how much water is in the solution, and I don't think that pH is defined without water. -Amarkov moo! 17:42, 21 February 2007 (UTC)
That was part of my point. As far as I'm aware, there is no such thing as the pH of a pure substance, only of the substance dissolved in a certain amount of water. -Amarkov moo! 20:51, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

see here(how is the Tardis bigger on the inside) p.s u need to be a dr who fan--I.W 21:09, 10 February 2007 (UTC)

The {{helpme}} system is for help answering questions on editing wikipedia, not questions on doctor who. Thanks. --pgk 21:14, 10 February 2007 (UTC)
see Edward Grim. thx --I.W 19:24, 8 February 2007 (UTC)
It is widely believed that he was, if he is, no one will know. You might be better off using IRC, rather than using {{helpme}} messages every few minutes. Somitho 19:48, 8 February 2007 (UTC)

Has any one know where i can find a skeleton image of a rabbit. see below for why i want one.--I.W 23:06, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

You might check commons, or dig around some animal biology books? Somitho 19:39, 8 February 2007 (UTC)

Is there a page about rabbit life cycle, or any section that will contain it. P.s if this help me is still here after Tuesday, can someone remove the help me and move this message to the section below. thx --I.W 22:29, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

If it's not in rabbit, which it doesn't seem to be, it's probably not in Wikipedia. Your assignment for today? :) Xiner (talk, email) 22:40, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

Am I allowed to put screen dumps (Which I will take myself) of my websites on my user page.--I.W 15:51, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

Two considerations here:
  • From a copyright point of view, you can only use free use images on userpages. Therefore, you'll have to licence your website's text and images under a free-use licence such as GFDL, CC-by-sa, or public domain to be able to use them in userspace, and most website owners don't want to do that. (Wikipedia is an exception). You'll also have to crop out any browser-specific parts of the screenshot like status bars and toolbars to ensure you don't include any non-fair-use-licenced logos there.
Clarifying this per a question on my talk page: By default, most information is copyrighted as all-rights-reserved by its author (I Am Not A Lawyer, so you'll be wise to check this information with another source); the author can give a licence for others to use this information. For instance, a public domain dedication (which strictly speaking is the absence of copyright rather than a licence) gives anyone the right to do anything with the information and to use it for any purpose. You can relicence the page by including a copyright notice in with the page; for instance, look to the bottom of a Wikipedia page and you'll see something along the lines of 'Content is available under the GNU Free Documentation Licence (which is often abbreviated to GFDL in practice)'. The articles about the respective licences might help you to choose which one to use; licencing is a common problem with images, so Wikipedia:Image copyright tags may also help you choose (look under 'self-made images'; the same principles apply to text, although of course you'll have to right the notices out in full on your website rather than using wikimarkup). Hope that helps! --ais523 16:19, 30 December 2006 (UTC)
You didn't make the background of your website, so you can't relicence it and therefore can't include it in an image on Wikipedia; there are also all-rights-reserved like copyright notices and things that are copyright of other people there (none of which could be included in the image). One thing you could do would be to upload the selfmade images to Wikipedia via Special:Upload, using the licence dropdown to set the licence, and just use the image rather than a picture of your website on your userpage. --ais523 16:35, 30 December 2006 (UTC)
Definitely don't email to ask for permission; with-permission images are not allowed on Wikipedia (that is, whether permission has been given is irrelevant to whether an image can be used or not), so you might end up in the embarassing position of being granted permission but not being able to use it. Asking them to licence their background public-domain (there are legal reasons why the other two licences wouldn't work in this case) is also unlikely, as that would be effectively the same as asking them to give away the background for free. I don't think there's a way to use that background on Wikipedia at all (because there's just no way the copyrights are going to end up compatible). --ais523 16:46, 30 December 2006 (UTC)
  • From a policy point of view, make sure that the images won't be considered spamming; don't provide too many and don't use promotional language to describe them. Normally, a link to a personal website is all that's given on a userpage. See WP:USERPAGE for more information. --ais523 15:59, 30 December 2006 (UTC)
Feel free to put {{helpme}} back up if you have any more questions. --ais523 15:59, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

Can we personalise our user page. like put html and pictures and stuff on it?

Yes, you can. But make sure that it is mostly related to the encyclopedia. For instance, a full biography on yourself would not be appropriate, because that is useless to building an encyclopedia. Read WP:USERPAGE for more information. -Amarkov blahedits 18:25, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Helpme - Clive

I made a page about clive (see below) but it's been turned into a redirect page can any ome help me--I.W 19:02, 4 May 2006 (UTC)

You created Clive(Doctor Who). That was moved to Clive (Doctor Who), that page was then changed to a redirect to Rose (Doctor Who), making the original a double redirect which someone fixed. It is highly appropriate that Clive redirects to Rose, since he is only a very minor character. If the info on Clive within the Rose article gets too big, then you can discuss (on the talk page) moving the info to a separate article.--Commander Keane 19:21, 4 May 2006 (UTC)

I've made a new page ( Clive ) and I need someone to put a picture on it, if you want to do that for me please post on this page a reply and I'll tell you where I want it. Many thanx --I.W 13:47, 1 May 2006 (UTC) P.S you need to be a good Dr.Who fan and seen Rose.

We can only help you, we can't do the work for you. You can have a look at Wikipedia:Images for general information about images in Wikipedia, and perhaps notify others at Wikipedia:Requested pictures that you're looking for such a picture. --TuukkaH 14:46, 1 May 2006 (UTC)

Use [1] to upload pictures. --Pilotguy (talk ¦ ) 19:06, 25 February 2006 (UTC)

For general info on images see Wikipedia:Images. If you want add an image to an article, Wikipedia:Extended image syntax will be of use. Or ask a question here, I will be watching.--Commander Keane 19:08, 25 February 2006 (UTC)
I have removed the {{help me}} template. Having it on your page causes a bot to report evey three minutes in an IRC channel. Did you actually need help?--Commander Keane 19:31, 25 February 2006 (UTC)
If you need help you can ask me a question and I will answer. What I meant about the bot reporting: In an IRC channel (a chat room - Click here to be instantly connected and we can speak real-time) a bot checks to see if anyone has {{help me}} on their talk page and then tells everyone in the IRC channel. For example, when you used {{help me}} the bot reported "Users requesting help: User talk:Imagine Wizard". It reports this every three mintues until the {{help me}} is removed. You placed it on your talk page but didn't ask a question, I didn't think you needed help.--Commander Keane 19:53, 25 February 2006 (UTC)

One more thing about pictures: please make sure only to upload pictures which you took yourself, or for which you have the permission of the photographer, or which are so old that copyright no longer applies. In other words, you can't just use photos you found on other web sites: they are probably copyright, and will just get removed again. Thanks! Stephen Turner (Talk) 08:35, 26 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Help Is Here

How may I help you? (Arundhati Bakshi (talkcontribs)) 18:53, 4 March 2006 (UTC)

I am often on at night between 8 or 9 PM my time - I use IST so you might want to use the time in GMT -- my GMT offset is +5:30 hours. You can determine when we may be on via timeanddate.com since I don't know where you are from. BTW, who is your favourite doctor? (Arundhati Bakshi (talkcontribs)) 20:46, 5 March 2006 (UTC)
OK, we are about 5 hours apart. 9PM for you is about 2 AM for me. However, I am off of school now and can make it on later if necessary. Even if we are not online at the same time, we should be able to talk via our talk pages. (Arundhati Bakshi (talkcontribs)) 20:56, 5 March 2006 (UTC)
Most people call me Runa, that's my nickname, but you can call me whatever you like, (some people shorten it to 'Aru'), don't worry as I am not a fast typist either.
You go ahead and start the article and I will add to it as we go. let's use the {{inuse}} template until we are finished so it won't get speedied or AfD'd. I will then help in any way I can.
My favourite doctor is Jon Pertwee. I loved his commanding presence and the extra drama he brought to the series; also him being stuck on earth mde the adventures seem more immediate and relevant. The Sci-Fi cnahhel is supposed to be broadcasting some Dr. Who this month. I am from India in a town called Jamshedpur. My school is SHCS (I did the page entirely on my own).
All the best! (Arundhati Bakshi (talkcontribs)) 17:42, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Dr. Who Airings

According to http://www.gallifreyone.com/news.php it will be hitting the airwaves on 20 March, about the same time as here (look under the "Broadcasting" section. then we can really get to work. :) (Arundhati Bakshi (talkcontribs)) 21:33, 8 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Dr. Who (Rose)

I saw the first Dr. Who episode last night on the Sci-Fi Channel. I got it at http://www.scifi.com and there is usually news at http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/ as well. (Arundhati Bakshi (talkcontribs)) 12:34, 18 March 2006 (UTC)

Nope, Colin is no relation to Tom. (I also answered on the talk page where you asked the question, but I wasn't sure you'd see it.)

[edit] Userboxes

You can find the guidelines for creating your own userboxes here but generally the restrictions say that they can't be incivl or anything like that, also, they can't make use of copyrighted images. See the link for details. Let me know if you need anymore help. Happy Editing!--Res2216firestar 22:40, 27 January 2007 (UTC)

Incivil means rude or unhelpful, stuff like that.--Res2216firestar 23:45, 28 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Your runescape subpage thingy

I've responded. Short answer: nope. -Amark moo! 15:31, 27 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Doctor Who titles

I suppose I shouldn't really do this, as technically it's a copyright violation, but I doubt that the BBC will sue you or me. You can download the titles used in The Runaway Bride (the 2005 Christmas special) from TVArk here. It's in RealMedia format, which I hope is OK for your purposes. —Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 01:08, 4 February 2007 (UTC)

Sorry — TVArk doesn't have the Runaway Bride titles. There's a clip of them at YouTube here, but I really don't know anything about how to extract the video. Good luck, though. —Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 18:05, 4 February 2007 (UTC)

Sorry again — I really don't know anything about video editing. Perhaps someone at the reference desk might be able to help you. —Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 22:03, 6 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] spin-off companions

I've replied to your question at WT:WHO. You might want to add that page to your watchlist — that way you can see if someone has responded, and you won't have to ask people to notify you on your talk page. :) —Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 03:36, 7 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Another note on using helpme

Besides what pgk said, please also note that you should start a new section at the bottom of the page, including when using {{helpme}}. Otherwise people have to hunt through the page for the tag. A helpme section may sound nice, but few would be familiar with the idea. Xiner (talk, email) 21:17, 10 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] TARDIS and watchlist

Hi, I.W. I've replied to your question at Talk:TARDIS, but I wanted to re-state what I said above: it's sort of considered bad etiquette to request user talk page notification every time you ask a question. Instead, what you can do is add the page to your watchlist. Then you can check whether the page has been updated by clicking on "my watchlist" on the top of any Wikipedia page when you're logged in. Thanks. —Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 20:34, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

yes but i hardly check my watchlist, and asking people to notify me on my user talkpage is easier as when they do so , a tag comes up saying "you have a new message" but when you put it in the watchlist, you don't get the tag. thx. p.s if some one replies on a subtalk page, does the tag come up.--I.W 20:21, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
I don't believe so. The problem is that when you ask people to notify you on your talk page when they've replied to a message, you're sort of asking them to reply twice: once wherever the original question was, and once on your talk page. I'm happy to answer your questions on talk pages, but the extra demand is a bit rude — sorry! —Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 21:22, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
