Imam Ali International Airport is an airport currently under construction in the eastern side of the Iraqi city of Najaf. It is named after Ali bin Abi Talib, the first Shia Imam and fourth Caliph to succeed prophet Mohamed, who is buried in the city. It is a private facility located on the site of a former military airbase. It is estimated to cost $73.8 million [1] and scheduled to be finished by late 2006/early 2007, although trial flights are planned from February 2006. The airport is seen as an attempt to "cement Najaf's position as the second capital of Iraq — and the hub of an emerging Shiite super-region that could alter the dynamics of the Middle East." [2]
