"Image Problem is the seventh episode of the French animated television series Code Lyoko. It premiered in France on October 15, 2003 and in the United States on April 27, 2004.

After an unexplained incident on Lyoko ends up devirtualizing Yumi without any cause, Yumi is taken to the infirmary. After waking up, she attacks Yolande. She continues to act weird throughout the day, wanting to go to Lyoko with everyone else. Jeremie won't let them, though, because he wants to know just what caused Yumi's devirtualization. Meanwhile, on Lyoko, Aelita finds several Kankrelats guarding an orange sphere, which she calls a Guardian, and informs Jeremie. Back at the school, the principal confronts Yumi about her attack on Yolande. When he threatens to call her parents, she attacks him, too. In another attempt to get the group to Lyoko, Yumi tries to seduce Jeremie to convince him to arrange a mission. She fails, but Odd and Ulrich stumble upon the scene. Jeremie tries to explain, leaving Yumi alone. Jeremie apolgizes for the incident, citing Yumi's strange behavior. When they head back to his room, they find his computer destroyed. Yumi seems the likely culprit. She shows up to meet them, still wanting to go to Lyoko. Having no choice, they go, but Yumi stops the scanner before it can close, leaving her alone in the scanner room. As she goes to work destroying the scanners, the others find the real Yumi trapped inside the Guardian.

Yumi and Aelita are running toward a Tower in the Ice Barrier Sector. As they reach it, Aelita enters while Yumi stands guard outside. We see Aelita speaking to Jeremie in the Tower when suddenly a scream is heard from outside. Aelita exits the Tower to find that Yumi has disappeared, and both she and Jeremie are left utterly worried and confused. Jeremie heads to the Scanner Room and sees Yumi unconscious in one of the Scanners.

Back at Kadic Junior High School, Odd is buying hot chocolate with Ulrich in the Vending Shacks and complains that it tastes terrible today. Sissi runs up, flips her hair in a prissy manner, and comments that Yumi has deserted Ulrich for once, and Odd dispatches her by responding that Sissi's brain deserted her "a long time ago". Sissi looks at Odd with annoyance and flips her hair again, "hmph"ing. Ulrich gets a call from Jeremie to head to the Factory. They leave, but not before Odd can recommend Sissi the hot chocolate, which Sissi actually purchases (thanks to Odd).

Ulrich and Odd carry Yumi to the Infirmary where Jeremie lies that she started feeling sick around recess time, and they leave. Yumi soon awakens and sits up quickly. The nurse insists she needs to rest and is about to place her hand on Yumi's shoulder. Yumi grips Yolande Perraudin's arm and she gasps in horror at what she then sees.

The rest of the gang is discussing what happened to Yumi. Ulrich thinks it may have just been a laser, but Jeremie says she had all her life points when she was devirtualized, and for some reason passed out in the Scanner. Then they notice Yumi standing nearby, but she acts strangely. She soon walks away scowling.

In Lyoko, Aelita decides to check out what happened and leaves the Tower. She starts to climb a small mountain of ice, and sees a glowing orange sphere she calls a Guardian over the next pass. Kankrelat sentries surround the Guardian. The Kankrelats open fire, so Aelita flees for the time being.

In the Cafeteria, the Gang interrogates Yumi on what happened, but all she says is she doesn't recall. Sissi, Hervé, and Nicolas show up. Sissi wants Ulrich to date her, and he, of course, says no in a disgusted manner. They all laugh except Yumi, and to everyone's surprise she says Ulrich should go out with Sissi, as she is very beautiful. After Sissi departs, her father shows up and orders Yumi to come to his office immediately.

After a brief scene of Hervé confronting Ulrich about dating Sissi, Yumi is in the Headmaster's office. Headmaster Delmas says what Yumi did was unspeakable, and Yolande Perraudin is still very upset. He gives Yumi two hours of detention in the library to calm her nerve, but she doesn't immediately go to the detention halls there. She instead stands, glowering. Headmaster Delmas says that something is troubling Yumi and offers to help, but she doesn't respond. Faced with this unfortunate intransigence, he decides to call Yumi's parents. As Headmaster Delmas touches the conference phone, Yumi places her hand on top of his to keep him from picking it up. Yumi shouts, "NO!", and The Eye of XANA appears on her forehead. She yanks the receiver off the hook and uses it to knock out Headmaster Delmas. After dropping the phone next to the unconscious Headmaster, she storms out of the office enclosure. Jim is outside in the lobby and greets Yumi sunnily, but Yumi storms off without responding. Jim gets suspicious (or concerned, depending on one's interpretation) and strokes his chin in thought.

Jeremie is on the desktop computer in his room when Yumi walks in. She says they need to go to the Scanner Room, but Jeremie isn't sending anyone to Lyoko until he's made sure it's safe and when he himself gives the command to. Yumi then removes his glasses and gazes deeply into his eyes, causing him to blush. She softly says it's important to her, and they need to go to the Scanner Room. Jeremie nervously stutters, and Yumi moves closer and closes her eyes. It appears she is about to kiss him when Ulrich and Odd walk in and are immediately shocked. Without waiting for an explanation, Ulrich angrily leaves. Jeremie runs after him, then Odd leaves as well. Yumi smiles to herslf.

During class, Ulrich and Odd haven't forgiven Jeremie. When they leave, Jeremie says that he doesn't know what happened to Yumi, but whatever it is, she's traumatized. Ulrich and Odd go with Jeremie to his room, only to find the computer and the other equipment have been obliterated. Jeremie asks who the last person to leave the room was, but Ulrich believes Yumi would never have done this. Then he agrees that XANA has attacked and this must be a distraction. Yumi suddenly shows up and inquires if they're going to the Scanner Room now. After a long pause Jeremie, believing Aelita could be in danger, agrees.

On the elevator to the Scanner Room, Ulrich and Odd are casting suspicious glances toward Yumi. Jeremie goes through the virtualization process:"Scanner Ulrich. Scanner Odd. Scanner Yumi." But as Yumi's scanner is about to close, she places her hand on the door to stop it. While Jeremie is finishing the virtualization, she pries the scanner door open and gets out.

Landing near the Tower in the Ice Barrier Sector, Ulrich asks where Yumi is. He tells Jeremie she wasn't virtualized.

Yumi is busy pulling the wires from a Scanner.

Back on Lyoko, Aelita runs toward them while dodging lasers. Ulrich and Odd make short work of the Kankrelats. Aelita tells them they need to free Yumi. As Ulrich is about to respond, Aelita says, "The real Yumi. The one who's here, on Lyoko." She says the other was a Polymorphic Clone created by XANA and warns Jeremie to stay away from it, but it's too late; he's already heading to the Scanner Room.

Jeremie arrives in the Scanner Room just as the fake Yumi pulls out the wires of the second Scanner. Seeing him, she drops the wires and pretends to be sad and confused. He leans down to inspect the wires, then looks up and the clone knocks him out.

On Lyoko, Ulrich and Odd destroy more Kankrelats that are guarding the Guardian that contains Yumi. Ulrich then approaches the Guardian. He begins stabbing, slashing and hacking at the orb with his katana, but with no avail. Aelita then suggests that she try a less physical approach. Aelita uses Creativity to produce a false image of Yumi. The Guardian, puzzled, relinquishes its grasp on the Real Yumi and engulfs the Image Yumi. The Guardian destabilizes and explodes, destroying it and the Image Yumi.

Yumi wakes up soon and asks what happened. Odd says they need to deactivate the Tower, and Aelita is worried about Jeremie. Ulrich then says that he's alone with the other one, and if she breaks the Scanners it's all over. Yumi is confused and asks who wants to wreck the Scanners. Odd replies darkly, "The other... you." Yumi decides that this is serious and one of them needs to get back to Earth right away. She says that she'll go, and Ulrich asks how she can devirtualize herself. She replies, "You're armed, aren't you?" Ulrich stares down at his katana.

The fake is about to destroy the last Scanner when the real Yumi emerges from it. Yumi says threateningly to her clone, "You know, you look like me when having a bad day." Both assume fight stances, and after a pause the fake uses a double roundhouse on Yumi. The real one blocks the first kick, but is knocked back by the second and falls against a Scanner.

On Lyoko, more Kankrelats have arrived to guard the Tower, and Ulrich and Odd battle them.

On Earth, the fake lifts the lid from the cylindrical hatch/data node in the middle of the room, revealing a hole to the Supercalculator Room. Yumi has recovered from the first blow and jumps toward the clone. It uses the metal lid to block her punch, and Yumi is sent flying back again. The fake tries to kick Yumi before she can get up, but Yumi catches the kick. Then Jeremie, who regains consciousness, shoves the fake into the hole in the middle of the room.

In Lyoko, they have defeated the Kankrelats and Aelita enters the Tower.

In the Scanner Room, Jeremie goes cautiosly toward the hole; the clone has been holding onto the edge. It tries to pull Jeremie down and escapes the hole. Exhausted, Yumi crawls toward them to try to help Jeremie, but she is too late. The fake Yumi hurls Jeremie into the hole.

Then, just in time, Aelita deactivates the Tower. A Return Trip to the Past is activated just before Jeremie can fall to his death. The Factory, city, and school are engulfed by the white bubble and time reverts.

In Jeremie's room, Aelita says that since XANA was able to materialize another Yumi, materialization is really possible. Jeremie says he saw the difference as soon as the fake started to flirt with him. In response, Yumi asks if they have any proof it's the real Yumi they're looking at, and removes Jeremie's glasses. Ulrich says he's had enough of that for one day, and Yumi asks if he's jealous. Odd says, "Sure looks like it!" and everyone except Ulrich begins laughing.

Yumi: Are you certain I am the right one?

(Yumi walks up to and pretends to flirt with Jeremie)

Jeremie: (blushing) What are you doing?

Ulrich: (stops Yumi) Okay, that's enough. I had enough of that.

Yumi: (turns around and looks at Ulrich) You're not jealous, are you Ulrich?

(Ulrich is surprised)

Odd: (gives a thumb up) Sure, looks like it.

(While Fake-Yumi is flirting with him)

Jeremie: Maybe you should go home and take a bath, no a cold shower, very very very cold! T-to calm you down!

(Ulrich and Odd walk in)

Jeremie: Ulrich, wait!

(Ulrich walks away and Jeremie chases after him)

Odd: (to Yumi) Bravo!

(After tasting hot chocolate from the machine)

Odd: Hey, what's wrong with the hot chocolate today? It tastes like dirty sweat socks and an old pair of sneakers!

Ulrich: Odd, it's the gourmet!

Odd: (to Sissi) I recommend the hot chocolate. Take my word for it.

[edit] Cinematic Notes

• This episode has shown that during the first season, a return trip could be activated without Jeremie activating it.

• At one point, while Headmaster Delmas is speaking to the Yumi clone in the office, his mustache becomes the same color as his beard.

• At one point, the shirt Ulrich wears under his short-sleeved jacket turns white.

• When Ulrich's feet were apparently shown in this episode, they obviously weren't his. Those were Yumi's feet.

• When the Scanner opens after Yumi disappears, the middle one opens. When Jeremie shows up, the middle one is open, but Yumi's boot can obviously be seen in the one next to it.
