The Century of Progress balloon. Pictured is the Lt. Cmdr. Thomas G. W. ("Tex") Settle (US Navy) solo flight at Soldiers Field during the Century of Progress World's Fair in Chicago, Illinois, 1933. This flight was aborted. Jeannette Piccard and men helping the Museum of Science and Industry (Chicago) rescued the balloon. Settle and Maj. Chester L. Fordney (US Marine Corps) piloted it again on November 20, 1933 to over 61,000 feet. Jean and Jeannette Piccard then reconditioned the balloon which Jeannette Piccard piloted to over 57,000 feet for science experiments on October 23, 1934.

Rationale for fair use: Subjects are deceased. No free alternative is known to exist. Subjects are pioneers in the construction of and use of balloon (aircraft).
