The Century of Progress balloon. Pictured is the Lt. Cmdr. Thomas G. W. ("Tex") Settle (US Navy) and Maj. Chester L. Fordney (US Marine Corps) flight on November 20, 1933 to over 61,000 feet in Akron, Ohio. Jean and Jeannette Piccard then reconditioned the balloon which Jeannette Piccard piloted to over 57,000 feet for science experiments on October 23, 1934.
