[edit] Team History
With 16 championships, Ilves is the most successful team in the Finnish ice-hockey league and plays its home games in Finland's first and oldest ice hall, Hakametsä. Ilves also won the Finnish soccer championship in 1983 and twice the national cup in both ice-hockey and soccer (Ilves won the last ice-hockey cup held in 1971 and has therefore been the reigning champion since). Nowadays Ilves is only a junior organization in soccer since the soccer club got into financial troubles in late nineties. Ilves is a predecessor of soccer team Tampere United. Ilves also has a futsal team in Finnish league which has won the Finnish championship three times (2004, 2005, 2007) and the cup competition once (2006), a floorball team at third highest level and a women's ringette team. They have numerous boys' and girls' junior teams in ice-hockey, soccer, floorball (boys only) and ringette (girls only) making it the largest sports club in Finland.
Ilves also has had American football, women's basketball and handball teams in past and won one bronze in American football and one silver in handball.
The most famous Ilves player is Raimo Helminen. Ilves is also famous for its large junior organization. Specifically, Ilves is known for producing goaltenders and skillful attackers. Ilves has the most championships in every junior level, with the exception of C-juniors (U-16) where Jokerit has one more, and also the most women's ice-hockey championships. Ilves has won 67 national ice-hockey championships all in all which is 30 more than the second best has.
