Ilan D. Hall (born April 6, 1982) is an American chef, best known as the winner of the second season of the Bravo television network's reality series Top Chef, ahead of Marcel Vigneron.
Hall's hometown is Great Neck, New York and he currently resides and works in New York City. Ilan’s parents were both immigrants: his father from Scotland, and his mother from Israel. [1] His mother, Rita, is a section designer in Newsday's editorial art department, [2] and he has a younger sister who is currently attending Bard College.
As a teenager, Hall worked in a seafood store in his hometown of Great Neck[3] and was later trained at Italy's Lorenzo de'Medici [4] and the Culinary Institute of America. He attended the CIA at the same time as runner-up Vigneron. Among the restaurants Hall has worked in is Top Chef host Tom Colicchio's Craft. [5]
Like previous winner Harold Dieterle, Hall won the first Elimination Challenge, as well as the whole competition. His specialty is Spanish cuisine and he formerly worked at Casa Mono, an Iberian restaurant in New York City. [6]
