In Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, Ike is the son of Greil, leader of the Greil Mercenaries, who takes over leadership after his father is killed by the Black Knight. For the majority of the game, he is in the employ of Princess Elincia of Crimea. Ike begins the game as a rather naive character. He had no memory or knowledge of his family's life in Gallia during his early years, and prior to the Greil Mercenaries' escape to Gallia, revealed that he didn't know what laguz are. He's a good-hearted individual, and also very protective of his friends and family. His primary personal motivation is to avenge his father after Greil is killed by the Black Knight, but he seeks no particular reward in aiding Crimea's liberation and restoring Elincia to the throne beyond the usual payment of services to the mercenary company. Although he has no desire to become nobility, he accepts the title of lord so that he can properly lead the Crimean liberation army following his triumph over Oliver in Chapter 17.

Ike begins the game as the newest full member of the Greil Mercenaries. Other members of the company tend to look down upon him in various ways, such as in his playful rivalry with Boyd and the volatile disdain that Shinon holds for him. Upon learning of the Daein invasion, Greil thrusts more responsibilities on Ike in an effort to prepare him for the task of leadership. Following Greil's death, Ike inherits the title of leader of the Greil Mercenaries. Upon hearing this Shinon and Gatrie leave the company, the former due to his extreme disdain for Ike, though Gatrie's reasons are unknown as he openly supports Ike's leadership after rejoining the mercenaries in Chapter 13.

After remaining in Gallia until Chapter 9, when Ike learns that King Caineghis of Gallia is unable to help Ike directly due to his people's hatred towards the beorc, Ike leaves Gallia and is escorted to Port Toha by a squad led by Ranulf, a loyal soldier to Caineghis. Ike then leads the mercenaries around the continent, constantly impressing those he meets with his bravery and his candor as he settles into his role as the new head of the Greil Mercenaries. Ike is a quick learner, although he has a tendency to be stubborn; after directing an outburst of anger at Apostle Sanaki, Emperess of the Begnion Theocracy and the most politically powerful beorc on the continent, he is later informed by Nasir and Titania that he is lucky to still have his head.

[edit] Abilities and statistics

As the game's central protagonist, Ike must be used in every mission, and should he die the game ends. Ike is the only character in the game capable of learning the skill Aether, which combines the effects of Sol (healing) and Luna (bypassing the enemy's Defense to do massive damage). In Chapter 27, Ike gains use of the blessed sword Ragnell in order to battle the Black Knight and carries the weapon with him for the rest of the game. Ragnell is unique in that unlike most other weapons, it will never break during battle. It is also one of the few swords with magic ability, allowing Ike to execute ranged attacks. Perhaps most importantly, it is the only weapon able to penetrate the armor of the Black Knight and King Ashnard. It also boosts Ike's Defense statistic by 5 points and prevents enemies from landing a critical hit, regardless of their class or the weapon they are wielding.

Ike's strength, speed, defense, hit points, and skill ratings are all very high. His magical resistance is moderate, and his luck is relatively low.
