Ihavandhoo Development Society (Dhivehi: އިހަވަންދޫ) is one of the inhabited islands of Haa Alif Atoll. Ihavandhoo Development Society is a non-profit making organization established in the island of Ihavandhoo in the Republic of Maldives. The NGO was lawfully registered in the Ministry of Home Affairs of Republic of Maldives in September 2005 and was officially inaugurated on 23 December 2005.

The NGO was founded by some energetic youth who hail from the soil of Ihavandhoo island. The mission of the organization is to create awareness and understanding, educate and empower people in the areas of education, health, environment, employment, and to work for socio-economic development and help the community lead a better life. IDS aims to work for the benefit of the community by focusing on the issues related to the society.

Mr. Mohamed Shafiu, Mr. Ali Mahir and Mr. Ahmed Ali are the founder members of the society. The Executive Committee of the Society comprises nine elected by the IDS members. Executive Committee is elected every two years.

The IDS has five membership categories. It includes Ordinary members, Institutional members, Associate members, Resource members and Honorary members. Although there is no annual subscription of membership fee, each member is obliged to pay an entrance fee of MRF 20 (Equivalent of US$2) upon acceptance as a member of the Soceity.

IDS aims to work with the members of the society with the government, international bodies and the NGOs in a friendly and an understandable environment to bring the benefit of the work done to the community as a whole.

Since the establishment of the Society, it has carried out numerous programs in order to achieve its objectives

Objectives


1- To work for the economic and social development of the community.

2- To organize and co-ordinate awareness creating programs for health sector.

3- To help facilitate to establish health services and equipments required to serve the community and help human resource development in the area of health.

4- To create awareness about maternal health, pregnancy, use of contraceptives, family planning.

5- To create awareness about diseases and about substance abuse, to take part in such programs organized by government authorities as well as non governmental organizations, youth groups and international NGOs.

6- To create awareness about safe drinking water and sanitation systems.

7- To create awareness about the use of nutritious food and the importance of hygiene and cleanliness of the living environment.

8- To help establish educational services aimed at increasing the scope of education for the community and to organize programs to train youth in different fields.

9- To establish educational services to the school leaving children and fishermen and to facilitate them earn a sound education.

10-To establish necessary facilities for preschool children and to help develop human resources required for this.

11- To help poor people, to help under privileged, to help orphans with earning an education.

12- To train youth for the income generating activities.

13- To make youth capable of working for the benefit of the community and improve the leadership of the youth.

14- To organize gatherings of Maldivian youth, to work for their unity and betterment by organizing inter atoll youth exchange programs and to participate in international programs organized in this regard.

15- To observe the changes caused to the environment both by the actions of human beings and by nature, to create awareness about environmental issues and to help solve the environmental problems faced by the community.

16- To preserve the endangered species of birds and to create awareness about the importance of this in the local community.

17- To create awareness about marine life, preserved species and over fishing, exploitation of resources and endangered species.

18- To work for the economic development of the community and the country, to create awareness about sustainable use of economic resources.

19- To introduce income generation activities for the lower income groups especially for women.

20- To help search jobs for unemployed people and to create job opportunities in the community.

21- To help poor people.

22- To create awareness about bad habits, adverse affects and negative influences and help build a united community with a strong foundation of peace and tranquility.

23- To organize programs for the elderly and for the people with disabilities to provide them equal rights in the community.

24- To play sports, to develop sports, to play music, and to organize stage shows and drams events.

25- To preserve the traditions and cultures of the Maldivians.

26- To achieve all the mentioned objectives, IDS will work closely with the government agencies, non-governmental organizations, international organizations. IDS also will try to take the membership of such organizations.

Membership of Ihavandhoo Development Society is of five categories. They are

1- Ordinary Membership;

To be eligible for Ordinary Membership of IDS, you should be at least of 18 years old.

2- Institutional Membership;

This category of membership is applicable for Institutions, Organizations, Associations, Non-Profit Making Organizations, Community Based Organizations, Clubs and Societies who support the cause of IDS and wants to be affiliated and corporative to achieve the corporate aims and objectives.

3- Associate Members:

Associate Members are those who volunteer and help IDS by volunteer efforts.

4- Resource Members:

IDS resource member is granted for those who give technical assistance to IDS. Resource Membership is to be approved by the IDS Executive Committee. Membership privileges for resource members do not include voting rights.

5- Honorary Membership:

Honorary Members are individuals and organizations who donate IDS more than US$1000 per year. This category of membership do not grant the members voting rights and the membership is granted upon the approval of the IDS Executive Committee.

Volunteers and interns, who give freely of their time, energy, skills and enthusiasm, have traditionally made an invaluable contribution the work of IDS. Volunteers or interns could typically expect to be involved in research work, IDS policy development and discussion, attending meetings, the IDS newsletter and website, following-up enquiries, as well as other interesting tasks and some administrative duties. Volunteers or interns should have an excellent knowledge of English and should ideally be available for a period of between three and six months. IDS provides all volunteers and interns with an accommodation and food expenses plus a letter of recommendation and/or reference at the end of their voluntary/training period.

Ihavandhoo Development Society is carrying out activities for the good of the community. IDS will be happy to accept volunteers from different countries of the world, irrespective of their race, religion and country. Name of the job: Physical Education Teacher

Duration of the Program: Two years with possible extension

Target Age Group: School Children of age between 10 and 16 and adult women

Prerequisites: Should hold a degree in the field of Physical Education
