Ignatians is a co-educational service organization at Loyola Marymount University named after Saint Ignatius of Loyola whose vision of becoming "men and women for others" is the organization's motto. Originally founded in 1981, Ignatians quickly grew to be known as a pioneer of trends that future service organizations at Loyola Marymount would follow. Known for their enthusiasm and close-knit community, as well as their gray cardigans and bright red I, Ignatians is fueled by an intense spirit and compassion for social justice.

[edit] History

The Loyola Marymount Ignatians service organization was founded in 1981 as the first co-ed service organization on campus. Created out of the need to attract commuter students to get involved in the service community, the earliest Ignatians stressed the importance of on-campus service but also emphasized the abundant off-campus opportunities for service. Ignatians has grown to include different types of students from diverse backgrounds who all have one thing in common: a love for serving others. The Jesuit tradition at Loyola Marymount University is rooted in creating well-rounded individuals who can grow and excel in academics and leadership. Of equal importance, however, is the emphasis placed on serving others and the surrounding community.

[edit] On-Campus Service

Ignatians works intimately with the university's Center for Service and Action to provide volunteers for various on-campus service events. These services include providing ushers for speakers, flyer distribution, assistance in Mass at Sacred Heart Chapel, etc.

In addition to requested services from the university, Ignatians also perform services for the student body through their Random Acts of Kindness program. They organize a specific themed event once a month for the student body and typically reach roughly 200 students with a random act of kindness on that chosen day. The act usually follows the theme of a major holiday in the month, such as Valentine's Day.
