Ifakara Community Group
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ifakara Community Group (ICG) is a community-based development organization (CBO) formed by the members themselves who are all citizens of Ifakara, Tanzania.
ICG addresses the problems faced by the community. ICG is a meeting place for those people of the Kilombero area who wish to better the life conditions in the community. This is done by project making and a tireless effort by the members to contribute to a higher level of awareness among their fellow citizens about such issues as HIV/AIDS, civil rights, and the condition of youths and children.
[edit] Projects
Ifakara Women Weavers Association (IWWA): IWWA is one of the partaker projects in ICG. IWWA is a forum for cooporation amongst 87 weavers, all of them women. The IWWA school of weavers is supplying young women of the Kilombero and Ulanga districts with an opportunity rarely given to women here: To be financially independent.
The Idete School for Mentally Impaired Children: In this part of Africa most retarded children have no opportunity to join any school or institution. Instead they are left at home by parents who are uneducated about the needs and life possibilities of children of this kind. In the rural village of Idete ten children have been collected so far to join a class where they are being taught different life skills. They are given a chance to have a social life and to develop into grownups who are able to contribute. And they get to feel happy in this place where their abilities are being nurtured. They are no longer being mocked or hidden away as shameful to their families.
HIV/AIDS education: One of the single biggest problems of the Ifakara Area is HIV/AIDS, and this is the case in most of sub-saharan Africa. Ignorance about the disease and the opportunities of protecting oneself from it is destroying the future generations of Africa. The affected people living with HIV are often hiding their disease or being shone away by their community and family if they stand up and tell about their condition. The ICG doing it's part in changing this situation by teaching school children as well as grownups about protection against HIV. Also ICG promotes the rights of the people affected by HIV. IPHA+ is an important partner of ICG in this field.
[edit] Cooperation
ICG is in close cooperation with the Danish NGO Kilangoro, which specializes in the Kilombero, Ulanga and Morogoro districts.
ICG is also in a close relationship with IPHA+, which is an organization for people in the Kilombero district living with HIV/AIDS.
