It was a international smash hit peaking at #11 on the Billboard Hot 100 and at #1 on The Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart where it stayed for 2 weeks. it was also a moderate hit in the UK peaking in the Top 25 of the UK Top 40 at #21 when it was originally released by itself, it was re-issued with One In A Million as a double A-side and the official UK peak position is #15 , If Your Girl Only Knew was also a hit in many other countries.

In the video Aaliyah appears at a party, on a motorcycle with Ginuwine, and by herself on a chair. She wears a dark leather outfit with her trademark sunglasses and bandana. Other cameos include Missy Elliott, Timbaland, 702, Lil' Kim and her brother Rashad.
