"If I Were a Carpenter" is the first episode of the British television comedy drama series Auf Wiedersehen, Pet. It was originally transmitted on Friday 11 November 1983.

Geordie bricklayers Dennis, Neville and Oz arrive in Germany, ready to take advantage of tax-free employment. When they arrive late at a building site it Düsseldorf, the hostel they expected was full and they are forced to live on site in a hut. Three others join them, two of whom they met on their journey: Cockney Wayne, Brummie Barry, and Bomber.
Also as a result of their lateness, all of the brickie positions had been filled. Rather than separate, or leave, they pretend that Neville is a carpenter.
Neville wakes up after a night drinking in town with a tattoo on his arm bearning the name "Lotte" rather than that of his wife Brenda.
