After a small comeback with "I Found Someone" in 1987, Cher's career hit big with the release of "If I Could Turn Back Time", which charted at number 1 in Australia and Norway, number 3 in the United States and number 6 in the United Kingdom.

The success was beyond good and it became Cher's second consecutive number 1 in the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart. It topped two countries and it became a top ten hit in nearly ten countries. Many have it for certain that this is Cher's second best world wide hit after Believe, but fortunately she managed to have many bigger hits later on including "The Shoop Shoop Song", "Strong Enough" and "Believe".

The video for "If I Could Turn Back Time" takes place in a ship where Cher sings to a lot of excited sailors. This video was filmed on board the USS Missouri while it was stationed at the former Long Beach Naval Shipyard at Pier D along with the crew. This video is often cited as an example of how female performers past their sexual prime are not as well received as their male counterparts (e.g Rolling Stones). This video is parodied in Family Guy Stewie Griffin: The Untold Story.

When the original video was made for the song it cause controversy when Cher was wearing almost nothing, but a very thin outfit which almost exposed her under waist nudity. Many networks on television would not even show the video due to its content. In 1989 the MTV network banned the video and only played it after 9:00 PM. Although many say that this was indeed the first video ever to be banned from MTV, many oppose to this explaining that many other artists had videos banned from MTV before "If I Could Turn Back Time" such as The Rolling Stones. Ultimately a second video was created which was known as a "censored" video. The video included new scenes and in fact was less strong in sexual content then the previous original video.

In the year 2000 an almighty remix was released, which was recorded off of her previous tour, Do You Believe?. An unofficial video was also created by Garry A. Cagle, which showed various clips of Cher singing "If I Could Turn Back Time" from her Living Proof: The Farewell Tour, Do You Believe? Tour and Heart of Stone Tour. The video also included many old clips of Cher, in which they had taken her off many videos and digitally added her into new backgrounds.

Finally in 2003 Cher released her Living Proof - Farewell Tour concert on DVD which included an official If I Could Turn Back Time remix video, named (2003 re-edit).
