The Hurricane Herald

This is the monthly newsletter of WikiProject Tropical Cyclones. The Hurricane Herald aims to give a summary of the activities of the WikiProject over the past month and upcoming events over the next month. In addition monthly tropical cyclone activity will be summarized.

You have received this as you are a member of the WikiProject, please add your username in the appropriate section on the mailing list. If you do not add your name to that list, the WikiProject will assume you do not wish to receive future versions of The Hurricane Herald.

Storm of the month

Typhoon Chanchu was the first typhoon and first super typhoon of the 2006 Pacific typhoon season. Forming on May 9 over the open western Pacific Ocean, Chanchu moved over the Philippines on the 11th. There, it dropped heavy rainfall, causing mudslides, crop damage, and 41 deaths. It moved into the South China Sea, where it rapidly strengthened to a super typhoon on May 14, one of only two super typhoons recorded in the sea. It turned to the north, weakened, and struck the Fujian province of China as a minimal typhoon on the 17th. The typhoon flooded 192 houses, while heavy rainfall caused deadly mudslides. In China, Chanchu caused at least 25 deaths and $480 million in damage (2006 USD). Elsewhere on its path, strong waves from the typhoon sank eleven Vietnamese ships, killing at least 44 people. In Taiwan, heavy rainfall killed two people, while in Japan, severe waves killed one person and injured another.

Other tropical cyclone activity

• Tropical Storm Aletta existed in the eastern Pacific Ocean from May 25 to May 29, peaking as a 45 mph tropical storm.

New articles and improvements wanted

Member of the month

The May member of the month is TitoXD. The WikiProject awards this to him for his brilliant work in improving articles. TitoXD joined the WikiProject in October just after it had been founded. Since then he has contributed substantially to many articles, for example Hurricane Nora (1997), which is currently a Featured Article Candidate. He is also actively involved in the assessment of articles and so helps to improve many more articles.

Explanation of content

If you have a topic which is not directly related to any specific article but is relevant to the WikiProject bring it up on the Newsletters talk page, and it will probably be included in a future edition of The Hurricane Herald.

These two sections are decided by the community on the newsletter's talk page:

• Storm of the month: This is determined by a straw poll on the page. While all storms will be mentioned on the newsletter, the selected storm will be described in more detail.
• Member of the month: Nominations are made on the talk page, voting is by secret ballot; read the talk page for details. The winner receives the WikiProject's barnstar (when we make it).

Main Page content

• 2005 Atlantic hurricane season appeared on the Main Page as Today's Featured Article on June 1.
• Hurricane Floyd will appear on the Main Page as Today's Featured Article on June 17.
• Entries from Dvorak technique, Typhoon Joan (1970), Typhoon Chanchu (2006), and Storm of October 1804 appeared on the Main Page in the Did you know column during May.
• Entries from 5 other articles relating to tropical cyclones had appeared in the Did you know column earlier in 2006.

The assessment scale

• The cyclone assessment scale is one of the bases of the new assessment scale for Version 1.0 of Wikipedia. It splits articles into several categories by quality, to identify which articles are "finished" and which ones still need to be improved.
• The assessment scale by itself counts of several grades:
  • FA: reserved for articles that have been identified as featured content only.
  • A: this grade is given to articles that are considered ready for Wikipedia:peer review. The way to get this grade assigned to an article is by asking other cyclone editors at the WikiProject's assessment page.
  • GA: reserved for articles that have passed a good article nomination.
  • B: these articles are "halfway there", and have most of the details of a complete article, yet it still has significant gaps in its coverage.
  • Start: articles that fall in this category have a decent amount of content, yet it is weak in many areas. Be bold and feel free to improve them!
  • Stub: these articles are mostly placeholders, and may in some cases be useless for the reader. It needs a lot of work to be brought to A-Class level.
• The way to use these assessments is by adding a parameter to the WikiProject template on the articles talk page ({{hurricane|class=B}} as an example). This feeds the article into a category which is read and parsed to create an assessment table, summary and log.

2004 Hurricane season

If you want to make such a big change as you did, you should really discuss it first. How do you plan on making the List of 2004 hurricanes and the 2004 season different? Do you plan on having articles for all storms? Do you even plan on bettering the existing articles? I noticed you put Charley and Frances up for GA. Just to let you know, I withdrew them. I am in the process of redoing the 2004 season storms. I've already done Alex, Bonnie, and Matthew, and I am working on Charley. Charley still needs a lot of work, too much to consider putting it up for GA. Frances's article is bad, as well. Hurricanehink (talk) 16:36, 4 June 2006 (UTC)

A possible job for you

Please take no offense by any of the following. I was just looking over at the Simple English Wikipedia, and it is really lacking in hurricane articles. I notice some of your writing is a little simplistic, and you are interested in article creating. The articles are about done here, but there's a world of articles for you to make there. You are too valuable of an asset to have waiting around here, as what we're mostly doing is making small changes to get articles to FA class. Looking at your passion for tropical cyclones, you should consider it. It will need to get done eventually, and I'm sure there would be other people around here to help out there. I mean no offense by this, but your writing is a little too simplistic for here in places. On the Simple English Wikipedia, your work would be extremely appreciated, and you can write on just about anything about tropical cyclones. All you would have to do is make sure you use short sentences and a spell checker. Give it a thought, and let me know what you think. Hurricanehink (talk) 21:01, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

It formed on ..err, had a decent rotaion on June 7, 0900 UTC (gibbs image), and dissapated on... well it hasn't dissapated yet but its losing it'd nice, defined circulation. It may have reached a peak around here. Sure I can help out with this storm if you want me too. Isn't it great to be getting a noreaster in June?! Thats like only happened once or twice before. I mean no offense by any of the following. For Patsy, it needs more storm history and impact, as well as inline sources throughout the entire article. For Hermine, first I must ask why? What do you think people would rather see more, a good article on a notable hurricane, or an adequate article on a tropical storm that caused next to no damage? Please calm down on the article creating. If you really want to make a lot of articles, consider Simple Wikipedia again. Here, we are working hard on fixing a lot of old mistakes, and are, in essense, rebuilding the Wikiproject to version 2.0. We want everything sourced, good writing, and plenty of information. Not all storms can have articles, and Hermine might be one of those storms. If you were to publish that, I would propose for it to be merged, simply based on the lack of good substance. Hermine is like how articles used to be made. We're trying for better quality, and Hermine simply isn't that good. First, the intro should be longer, but that's minor. The storm history has next to nothing in it. You should follow the advice for making a good article that was sent out last month. By that, I mean the storm history should be at least two paragraphs, with detailed information on its genesis, peak, track, and demise. The impact is practically a rewrite of the TCR. You need more than one source for an impact area. How do you know that few realized a tropical storm was approaching? I would strongly recommend against publishing Hermine like that. Well, I could lead you to the official American Idol thread where they are verifying that he is Chris Adam Daughtry. Actually, there are various sources pointing out at different things. At his homecoming party, his family referred to him as "Christopher Adam Daughtry". Plus, someone on the official American Idol boards looked his name up in the Yellow Pages. He is indeed Christopher Adam Daughtry, there. However, many people say it is Jacob. Someone even said it is Vincent. So, I'm not quite sure. For Aere, I can hardly assess it, given that there's no research done to it. For Debby, there's nothing much there. There's a little impact, but not enough to justify an article. Same with Jose. Please, calm down with the article creating. There isn't much need for new articles. We need more good articles. If you can make a good new article, that's fine, but you're not putting enough effort into them. It would be more advantageous to put the effort you are using into an existing article. It's only ok. There's simply not a lot there, and there's not enough new information in that to justify having a separate article. Tropical Cyclone Rainfall Graphics

If you take a look at the graphics on the main web site, the graphics do not contain an isohyet for amounts under one inch. Be sure that those amounts are on the parent spreadsheet though...the small amounts are not ignored, they just haven't been mapped for the 170+ storms in the climatology. Hurricane Debby

Thoughts:

• Opening:
  • Opening sentence should have a more interesting fact, the current generic one is rather dull.
  • Decapitalistion of headings - should be "Storm history", not "Storm History"
  • Move Image:07LDEBBY04.jpg down to impact
  • Fix the mistake in the infobox (Kammuri)
• Storm history:
  • First paragraph of storm history needs cleanup, Debby didn't begin when a tropical wave moved off the African coast; it formed from a tropical wave moving off the African coast.
  • Tropical Depression 1?
  • 60 mph is TS strength... it shouldn't have had a numbered TD stage, it should've immediately become TS 07L, rather than TD7. (I don't know for sure, I'm going by what you put in your sandbox)
  • "But the hurricane force winds were very concentrated; 74+ mph winds only existed 25 miles from the center." Remove the mention of 74+, and link "hurricane force" to either the SSHS or the Beaufort scale.
  • "A peak intensity of 85 mph was later measured, but with a minimum central pressure of only 1004 mbar. After weakening slightly, it reached its lowest pressure of 991 mbar, but with only 80 mph winds." needs a cite.
  • Change "22nd" to "August 22", fully wikilinked.
  • "Only three hours later, Hurricane Debby struck St. Barthelemy also with 75 mph winds. And another six hours later, the tropical system moved over Virgin Gorda at the same intensity." sounds weird, instead, try "Shortly after, Debby also struck St. Barthelemy and Virgin Gorda as a minimal hurricane."
• Preparations
  • Spelling - Puerto Rico
  • "In other places falling in the range of Debby's predicted path" sounds weird, try "Elsewhere within range of Debby's predicted path"
  • "On Antigua, many places lost their electricity, likely to prevent storm damage." makes little sense to me.
  • "And when the hurricane began to churn the waters off the coast of the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Hovensa Oil Refinery in St.Croix had to be shut down. This caused gas prices to raise." Don't start sentences with "And". Poor grammatical form, try "When the hurricane moved into waters off the coast of the ..."
  • Warnings and watches isn't needed unless you perhaps talk about the impact of the warnings, like if any false warnings were issued etc. Otherwise it's just useless trivia.
• Impact
  • "And away from the storm in the southernmost end of the Antilles, Trinidad and Tobago had a feeder band develop over the country. That resulted in flooding in the Barrackpore region." again with the "and"... simple removing the and would work here.
  • U.S. section needs metrification.
  • "And in the nearby town of La Vega, bridges over the Piedra River and Jumunucu River collapsed due to the heavy rainfall and flooding." No "and" needed.
  • Spelling - Another
  • "Port-De-Paix, Haiti, encountered some outer rain bands that tore away many tin roofs from the numerous shanties and flooded some homes." extraneous comma after Haiti - do you say "Atlanta, encountered some ..."?
  • "A storm surge also swept away one home, but without any reports of injury or death." Storm surge is plural.
  • Lack of retirement: Change "wasn't" to "was not".

Even though some of the same cloud mass seemed to pass from Debby to the subtropical cyclone (which some forecast offices called a tropical storm in real-time), I remember watching Debby's low level circulation die in real-time across the northwest Caribbean well to the west-southwest of its old thunderstorm activity. It would be nice if it were the same low, because my track forecast took it across the Bahamas. =) Remember, it has to be the same trackable low pressure center to keep the same TC name. What happenned to Lenny after TPC dropped it would be a great example...the low tracked almost clear across the Atlantic (a 3 week eastward trek) before retograding to within a few hundred miles east of Bermuda on the first days of December. If it were deemed tropical/subtropical during any portion of the later track, it would have kept the name Lenny. Thegreatdr 19:59, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

Okay, my thoughts: Firstly, your talk page is not a forum, get your friends to stop treating this like a discussion board, please.

Secondly:

• General:
  • Where are the references/sources? I see only one. You should not make this an article without more sources.
  • Link Marshallese language
  • Aere was contributed by the United States
  • More needed in the introduction, it's currently too short. Look at Typhoon Joan (1970) or Typhoon Chanchu (2006).
  • Infobox: Highest winds should be given in kt (km/h, mph), as the JMA and JTWC do all WPac advisories in knots and hence should be considered as the standard unit for this basin.
  • Metrification
  • "Observations over land with Aere were numerous. In the Ryukyu Islands, the lowest pressure observed was 960.9 mbar (hPa) at Ishigakijima, which received 314.5 mm of rainfall between the 23rd and 25th. Ishigakijima, Okinawa, spent as long as eight hours within Aere's eye, which was about 110 kilometers (67 miles) in diameter at the time." – Then where is the Ryukyu Islands in the infobox?
  • Source for PAGASA name
  • Properly link all dates, please. "By the 16^th" should become "By August 16", et cetera.
  • Please, stop copying verbatim from the JTWC.
