Outdoor ice skating in Austria

Photographed by Klafubra on the 28.12.2003 @ Presseggersee, Carinthia, Austria

An ice layer thick enough for safe ice skating normally forms on this lake every year. In 2003 the ice was exceptionally smooth as a result of a combination of three factors during the week before the picture was taken: 1) A complete lack of snowfall 2) very little wind 3) clear skies at night resulting in temperatures as low as -20 C The ice layer on the picture is about 20 cm thick. The bottom of the lake was visible through the ice. There were about 100 skaters present, though none had ventured to the centre of the lake where the picture was taken.
