Icefire is a novel by an English author, Chris D'Lacey. It is the sequel to his 2001 novel The Fire Within. The book was shortlisted for an Angus Book Award in 2006.

The Fire Within is about a young man named David Rain. He goes to a university and needs somewhere to stay. He finds a house on Wayward Crescet and moves in, but little did he know that one step into the house would change his life forever...
The owner of the house, Liz gladly lets David stay with her and Lucy, her daughter. They aren't the regular family you meet or see every day. Liz earns her living by making clay Dragons, and there is a lot of mystery surronding them. And Liz's daughter, Lucy loves squirrels, and brings it on David to help her catch a blind-in-one-eye grey squirrel she named Conker. As a welcome present, David gets a free dragon from Liz. He names the dragon Gadzooks and learns Zookie (his nickname for the dragon) is a story dragon. A dragon who is going to help him find inspriation to write stories. Finally David and Lucy catch Conker and another squirrel and take them to the local animal shelter, in where a girl, Sophie (who David has a crush on) works. She takes both the squirrels in and Lucy tells Sophie that David is writing a story about them for her. Sophie is interested in reading it and promises she'll call when she has news about Conker. Sophie calls after a few days and comes over with good and bad news about Conker. Conker's not really blind, but he has liver failure and is going to die. Later, Conker dies and David finishes the story, earning him Sophie's heart.
In Icefire the story continues with David's girlfriend Sophie having to go to Africa for 8 months. David feels lonely but loneliness is the least of his problems.
Aunt Gwyneth comes for a visit, but David's friend, Suzanna (also known as Zanna)knows Aunt Gwyneth isn't someone who she seems to be. An important person in this book is Professor Bergstorm, one of David's teachers, which you find out at the end is Lorel, one of the nine bears who ruled the ice. Gadzooks helps David write a few stories but the stories end up as the future. And keys to the past.
SPOILERS:Couples. David, feeling lonely goes online to check hisa e-mail and finds an email from Zanna,a creepy goth girl with a good figure (as Liz once reminds David)She helps David uncover some secrets about Aunt Gwyneth and then she kisses him. David is shocked and confused, and Lucy is angry at him because she thinks Zanna is a witch. Later they go out to the library gardens and then the rain starts to fall and they "snuggle" to keep dry. David then tells her he has a girlfriend in Africa and she leaves upset. Then Sophie, his girlfriend, comes back to say she is going to spend 3 years in Africa instead of the 8 months. She tells David that they shouldn't see each other and David rushes off to find Zanna, including going to her house only to find her sister and he gives her a message telling him he's sorry. Then he surrenders and goes back to Wayward Crescent and packs for his trip to the Artic. At the end Zanna runs to David and asks if his life has room for her. He says yes.
