[edit] Disambiguation request

Could a knowledgable person please disambiguate fabric in the passage "adapters on each server blade and switch fabric of 12 Myrinet switches"? The only option at Fabric that would make sense in this case would be Fibre Channel fabric, but it is not clear to me that this would be a proper piping to establish. Thanks. [edit] TOP500 entries

Of course the position within the TOP500 listing can be used in the article (if properly augmented by the date at which this information was extracted). But since the TOP500 list is in constant motion, wouldn't it be better to add this information in form of a small table, which can be easier updated as a paragraph. Furthermore - and this goes along with the above - MareNostrum will be supersided as Europe's fastest supercomputer by another BlueGene/L installation at the reseacrh center Juelich. That's fine, I just think a table would look ugly, and not save that much time over changing the text. It would have to be updated exactly as often if not more. The way it is in the text, top ten won't have to be changed until it needs to say top 20, and Europe's fastest doesn't need to change until another is certified to beat it. So it's really only a couple updates a year at most, which isn't too much. If enough faster computers are installed in Europe it could just say one of Europe's fastest. For the table to be more useful it would need to be more specific which would require more updating. - Taxman Talk 13:19, 29 March 2006 (UTC)
Point taken, though this was part of what I actually had in mind, namely e.g. tracking the computers status over the various editions of the TOP500 list. Thus you'd be able to track its position within the list - i.e. you'd add information and not only update them. But this of course might be a matter taste. - Lars Baehren 15:28, 30 March 2006 (UTC)
Oh, well if you want to add all the past data and track it over successive lists that is good too. I just wanted to go the easy route. :) A nice looking table near the end of the article would be fine, but maybe the text should stay like it is? It's up to you if you're willing to update it I guess. - Taxman Talk 20:20, 30 March 2006 (UTC)

The new Top500 is published and MareNostrum advanced! It is now a 5th place. It seems they upgraded it with JS21 blades using PowerPC 970MP. I'm not familiar with the details of this upgrade but this article shoud probably be updated to reflect this. -- Henriok 00:20, 14 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Rename

I suggest that we rename this article MareNostrum (supercomputer). IBM did build it, granted that, but it's owned by the Barcelona Supercomputing Center. It will reflect how some other supercomputers articles are named, like: Thunderbird (supercomputer), Columbia (supercomputer) and Kalpana (supercomputer). And.. in contrast to other "IBM Whatever" machines, MareNostrum is not a custom built machine (like IBM Roadrunner), it's built from standard parts. -- Henriok 00:37, 14 November 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, I couldn't see the justification for the rename in the first place. But per naming conventions, there's no need to add the (supercomputer) because there's only one MareNostrum. There is a disambig at Mare Nostrum, but that's fine, all we have to do is link to that at the top. I suggest moving back to the original title. - Taxman Talk 14:48, 14 November 2006 (UTC)
I second that. -- Henriok 18:01, 16 November 2006 (UTC)
