IBM Tivoli Framework

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

  • IBM/Tivoli Configuration Manager - Provides hardware and software Inventory and Software Distribution capabilities for Unix (AIX, Solaris, HP-UX), Linux and Windows. The architecture scales from hundreds to hundreds of thousands of computers, and is in use in large companies and government enterprises worldwide.
  • IBM/Tivoli Remote Control - Includes VNC-like capabilities and allows for remote system administration, configuration, and software installation. It uses the Tivoli Framework to provide authorization, allowing administrators to restrict access to groups of computers to specific support groups. The 4 potential (and distinct) functionalities with Tivoli's Remote Control tool is (1)Remote Control, (2)File Transfer, (3)Remote Reboot, and (4)Chat.

The benefit of Tivoli's Remote Control functionality includes some of the following:

If the Framework exists on the PCs (Controller and Target) there is no install required (1 time admin configuration will be required, of course);
The robust Tivoli security paradigm can limit specific admin(s) access to specific PC(s);
Tivoli centrally tracks (audits) which admins touched who, when, and even can track some specific actions performed on the Target;
Tivoli has the ability to force (or not) a popup so the Target PC must "approve" the Remote Control session before proceeding;
A centralised reporting tool that takes input from a variety of sources and allows logging of security issues and operational problems with various systems.
In order to operate successfully it needs a Tivoli Risk Manager Server & Client, as well as a set of 'sensors' which collect input for the Risk Manager. These "sensors" can be IBM RM supplied or third party. The Risk Manager Adaptors act as a 'convertor/translator' allowing Risk Manager to integrate that input with any other input it already collects.
