IBM Tivoli Directory Server

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

IBM Tivoli Directory Server (ITDS), formerly known as IBM Directory Server is an IBM implementation of the LDAP protocol.

[edit] History

In the beginning, IBM named its product as IBM Secureway Directory. This name wasn't changed until the Release 5.1 of the product and was then known as IBM Directory Server. In the next release of the product, I.E. Release 5.2, the name was again changed to include the Tivoli in it, and is known as IBM Tivoli Directory Server. The latest release offered as on April 2005 is IBM Tivoli Directory Server 6.0

[edit] Comments

IBM's directory server uses their DB2/UDB database as the underlying data store. In older versions, the impact of this was that it had comparatively poor performance, and required tuning of both the LDAP server and the UDB server to get any kind of respectable performance. As of at least the latest version (6.0) and possibly the one before (5.1) it is believed that this poor performance has been remediated.

One advantage that this product does have though is that it runs on IBM mainframes. Supported platforms also include: Linux, AIX, HP-UX, Solaris, and Windows. Another advantage is that it's free, as in "no cost". It has been free for at least the last five years, and there has been no indication that this will change.

You may download it from their "Trials and Betas" section, but it is not a trial or a beta version. As long as the product description starts with "Released Product" then it is a full, production-ready version. You may find it at the IBM Trials & betas page where you should select Tivoli in the "Featured trial by brand" drop-down menu. Then click on the "View all Tivoli trials and betas" link. ITDS for all versions and platforms will be listed there. To make the list more manageable, you can select the "Released products" filter.
