Ian Richard Peregrine Liddell-Grainger (born 23 February 1959) is a politician in the United Kingdom. He has been the Conservative Member of Parliament for Bridgwater since the 2001 general election, when he succeeded Tom King.
Liddell-Grainger was born at Edinburgh and educated at Millfield School in Somerset and South Scotland Agricultural College. Before entering Parliament he ran a 250 acre farm in the Scottish Borders and later became a company director in Newcastle of his family holdings in the City. He was also a Major in the Territorial Army with the 6th Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, commanding the machine-gun Platoon and then X Company of the Battalion in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and an adviser to the Ministry of Defence. In the 1997 general election Liddell-Grainger contested Torridge and West Devon, where he came second to the Liberal Democrat candidate John Burnett.
Liddell-Grainger is a great-great-great grandson of Queen Victoria, as his great-grandmother was Princess Alice, Countess of Athlone, and he is thus in the line of succession to the British Throne. He is also a great-grandson of the 12th Earl of Lindsey.
Liddell-Grainger has been married since 31 October 1985 to the former Jill Nesbit (born 9 March 1956) and they have three children: Peter Richard (born 6 May 1987), Sophy Victoria (born 27 December 1988), and Mary Alexandra (born 9 September 1992).
Liddell-Grainger is on the Public Administration Committee in the House of Commons. He is also a member of the All Parliamentary Armed Forces Scheme with the Royal Air Force. Liddell-Grainger was previously on the DEFRA select committee and the Scottish Committee as well as on the all Parliamentary Radio Group and the Pharmaceutical Group. He is also a member of the Cornerstone Group a ginger group within the Conservative Party, which seeks to promote socially conservative values. His interests include the economy, constitutional affairs, rural matters and he has also spoken out in favour of making Herceptin available for early-stage breast cancer sufferers.
In 2004-2005 Ian Liddell-Grainger was involved in a minor controversy after he allegedly sent emails to himself via WriteToThem.com, a website which attempts to measure the responsiveness of MP's to letters from their constituents. Mr Liddell-Grainger was subsequently disqualified from the website [1].
