[edit] Song information and music video
The song was written under the working title "Have Your Way with Me" by Harold Lilly and Kanye West. It contains a sample of "(They Long to Be) Close to You" written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. The song was a hit with the critics, Rolling Stone said "on 'I Want You', with help from West, she evokes the Motown dreams her siblings lived" but like the previous singles from Damita Jo, it was shadowed by the Super Bowl halftime show incident. It received very little radio airplay on mainstream radio, instead receiving more airplay on urban stations. Jackson garned several award nominations including "Best Female R&B Vocal Performance" at the 2005 Grammy Awards. It peaked at number fifty-seven on the Billboard Hot 100 and number eighteen on Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. But due to the strain on singles from Janet's Damita Jo album, it failed to impact the pop charts. It was released under a LidRock CD and still ended up becoming a RIAA-certified Platinum single for Jackson. The song was only released in the U.S. as a single. It appeared as a double A-side with "All Nite (Don't Stop)" in some international markets such as United Kingdom, Australia, and Japan.
The video for "I Want You" was directed by Dave Meyers. It takes place at night and shows Janet taking bus and walking through the town to meet her beau Jermaine Dupri at a recreational center. After the Super Bowl incident, MTV refused to aired Jackson's new videos including "I Want You". The video could only be seen on MTV Hits and MTV Jams. The video aired regularly on BET and VH1 and their digital outlets.
