I Need To Lose Ten Pounds is a 2006 ultra-low budget comedy film directed by Francis Frain.
The film premiered at Tromadance 2006. It was one of only three feature length films to premiere at the festival.
The film was conceived in January 2000. Francis and childhood friend William Forte decided to write a musical comedy featuring a fat army, an evil Richard Simmons and a whore factory, all surrounding the story of an overweight teenager incapable of losing weight. The young writers were only fourteen at the time, and finished the script a year later, passing it back and forth via e-mail. The writing considered (and purposfully wrote as) sloppy, offensive, irreverent and immature.
Soon after, Francis was introduced to Jonathan Hunt, a local musician/computer technician who became interested in the project. Jon would ultimately compose the music, fund the film, provide the equipment, act in the film and be a key component in post production.
Later that year, Alan Desmarais was cast to play the lead role of Miguel. At the time he was cast, he had a regular boys hair cut. When the film started shooting, his hair grew down the length of his back. Alan also designed the poster/DVD box art.
Several others became integral to the film's completion, including Francis' girlfriend Nina Szulewski, who was a producer, actor and sound recordist and Corey Huntington, who played the role of Silly Waunka and helped to revise the screenplay.
I Need to Lose Ten Pounds is a high speed comedy with eight musical numbers. It was shot in and around Westport, Massachusetts, North Dartmouth, Massachusetts, Newport, Rhode Island and Little Compton, Rhode Island. Everyone involved in the film worked for free and the filmmakers were able to receive over thirteen expensive locations for free, including St. George's Chapel in Newport, Rhode Island.
The movie's local premiere was on March 24, 2006, at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, which was also one of the locations used in the film.
The film was shot on the Panasonic AG-DVX100 24p.
It was recently announced that Troma Entertainment will be distributing the film internationally. In 2007 it was announced that "I Need To Lose Ten Pounds" has been awarded the "Independent Soul Award" from Troma Entertainment.
