"I Fought in a War" is the first song from the album Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like a Peasant , by Scottish band Belle & Sebastian. The song starts with a Stuart Murdoch solo on acoustic guitar and vocals, with the rest of the band joining in as the song continues. The slowness of the song starts a theme which is followed by the rest of the album. The song was used in the notable 2004 BBC documentary The Power of Nightmares.
This song was later covered by Damian Rice. This particular cut is used in the 2006 documentary Why We Fight released by Sony Picture Classics.
[edit] The book
"I Fought in a War" was not only requested in music shops, but also, due to a photo provided in the album's extra artwork, in book shops. Within the album's photography collection were pictures of two books, Beyond the Sunrise, and I Fought in a War. Both of books are also titles of songs on the album, and are fictional creations, but due to the bands interest in literature many fans have tried to locate the books which inspired the songs. Belle & Sebastian have informed fans on the fictionality of the book on the "Questions and Answers" [1] section of the website.
