I Could Have Lied is a song by The Red Hot Chili Peppers. It appears on their 1991 album, Blood Sugar Sex Magik. The sixth track on the album, it is a ballad in which Anthony Kiedis sings about a troubled relationship he had with Sinéad O'Connor. According to the 1991 bio Funky Monks, the song started out as a poem, Rick Rubin(Blood Sugar Sex Magik producer) asked Kiedis if he could take a look at Kiedis' collection of poems and songs at the time, looking for ideas. Immidiately "I Could Have Lied" caught Rubin's eye and questioned Kiedis. Asking him to make it into a song. And finished. John Frusciante's guitar plays a very prominent role in this song, including two solos. The song changes key between B Minor and E Minor several times throughout its duration. It features a more mellow and slow feel, a style which was not previously associated with the Red Hot Chili Peppers. This style would signpost the direction the band would take in later albums Californication, By the Way, and Stadium Arcadium.
