I. E. S. Edwards

Dr Iorweth Eiddon Stephen Edwards (Born London July 1909-September 1996) - I.E.S. Edwards was for the last half of the 20th Century considered to be the world's leading expert on the Pyramids of Egypt.
He attended Merchant Taylors' School and Cambridge University gaining a 'First' in Oriental Languages and entered the Department of Egyptian Antiquities of the British Museum in 1934. During World War II he was sent to Egypt. In 1946 he wrote 'The Pyramids of Egypt', which was published by Pelican Books in 1947. In 1955 he was the Keeper of Egyptian Antiquities at the British Museum, and remained there until his retirement in 1974. He was also Vice-President of the Egypt Exploration Society.
