I'll be back

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"I'll be back" is best known as a catch phrase associated with Arnold Schwarzenegger's title character from the 1984 science fiction film The Terminator. The original screenplay had the line scripted as "I'll come back".[1][2] The American Film Institute honored the quote on 21 July 2005 by ranking it #37 on a list of the best movie quotes in the past 100 years of film.

[edit] Variations

Since The Terminator, variations of the line have been in a number of other Schwarzenegger's films:

  • The Terminator (1984) - "I'll be back." (said before leaving the police station. Returns by driving a car through the front door.)
  • Commando (1985) - "I'll be back, Bennett!" (before being put on an aeroplane against his will.)
  • The Running Man (1987) - "Killian, I'll be back!" (to Damon Killian, who does not expect Schwarzenegger's character to survive)
  • Twins (1988) - "If you're lying to me, I'll be back!" (to the doctor who headed the experiment that created him)
  • Kindergarten Cop (1990) - "I'm back!" (returning to the classroom full of kids)
  • Total Recall (1990) - "I'll be back!" (being taken back to Rekall)
  • Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) - "I'll be back." (leaving the Cyberdyne Systems Corporation building during the battle with the police. Returns by driving a truck through the front door.)
  • Last Action Hero (1993) - "I'll be back.... Ha! Bet you didn't expect me to say that!" (After a kid tells him he is too predictable.)
  • The Sixth Day (2000) - "I may be back..." (to pet store owner)
  • Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003) - "She'll be back." (in reference to the enemy TX android) and "I'm back!" (after emerging from the wreckage of a crashed helicopter)

Schwarzenegger has since used the phrase during public speeches as part of his career as the governor of the U.S. state of California.[3][4]
