Hyzenthlay

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hyzenthlay (Shine-dew-fur or "fur shining like dew") is one of the Efrafan does that escaped with Bigwig.

She was the representative leader of a group who tried to convince Efrafa's chief rabbit, General Woundwort, to extend the warren to a second one due to forced overcrowding in the first (it was due to this that several does could not produce offspring because the population was already too high). Hyzenthlay was immediately disregarded and told to leave.

When Bigwig spoke to her and tried to prompt her to escape with him to the warren of Watership Down, Hyzenthlay showed dismay and stated that she wanted the others to come with her as well. Bigwig agreed to this, and she and several other captors of Efrafa escaped with her whilst a diversion was produced to keep General Woundwort's guards distracted.

In Tales from Watership Down she mates with Hazel and the two appear to be ruling the warren as chief rabbits.

Hyzenthlay has also claimed that she can sometimes see when "things are true". She has been linked to Fiver because of their similarity.

[edit] Appearance in the Movie

Hyzenthlay appears like several others do in the Efrafan warren. A noticeable feature is two dark patches around the bottom of her eyes, which are both pale blue in colour. Her fur is much more pink or red than other rabbits' coats, and is a darker brown than the typical tawny. The inside of her ears, stomach, and beneath her tail has the normal lighter markings.

[edit] Other media

In the feature film adaptation, Hyzenthlay plays a more prominent role. This shows in the climatic relay to lure the farm dog to attack the Efrafans besieging the Watership Down warren where the doe is the critical final rabbit to the warren. In the book, Hyzenthlay does not play a part in leading the dog in the warren. She is in fact heavily pregnant with a litter and it is not speculated on who she mated with although many fans believe she mated with Hazel.
