Hyuga clan

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Hyuga clan (日向一族 Hyūga Ichizoku?, "Hyūga family") is a fictional clan of ninja in the manga/anime Naruto. Hyuga (日向) means "Towards the Sun" and is the name of a city in the Miyazaki Prefecture in Japan. It is assumed in the series that the Uchiha clan descended from the Hyuga clan, and that the kekkei genkai of the former is descended from the latter's.

The Hyuga clan is considered to be one of the oldest and most powerful noble clans in Konohagakure. All Hyuga clan members are born with the Byakugan, the inherited kekkei genkai of the clan. The clan revolves around the Byakugan and is separated into two parts, the main house (宗家 Sōke?) and the branch house (分家 Bunke?), a creation that protects the secrets of the Byakugan from outsiders. The main house runs the family while the branch house protects it. The members of the branch house are branded with a cursed seal. This seal gives the main house members absolute control over the branch members, because they can destroy the branch members' brains with a simple hand gesture. This seal also makes sure the secret of the Hyuga's Byakugan is safe, because it seals the Byakugan after the wearer of the seal dies. There seems to be a great deal of bitterness between members of the main and branch houses, most likely due to the fact that no matter how powerful branch members become, they exist solely to protect the Hyuga secrets. This can be seen in the attitudes of Hizashi and Neji.

Members of the clan are instructed in the use of the Gentle Fist style, which uses the Byakugan to view the opponent's chakra circulatory system and deal precise blows to disable and impede the flow of chakra. Due to training in this style, Hyuga clan members tend to have excellent chakra control. This is emphasized in jutsus that utilize this chakra control, as well as the nuances of the Gentle Fist style. Eight Trigrams Sixty-Four Palms uses the Gentle Fist style to strike sixty-four chakra points on the opponent's body, effectively halting the flow of chakra. Eight Trigrams Palms Heavenly Spin is the clan's defensive technique, with the user releasing an enormous amount of chakra, and then whirling to use the chakra as a shield to deflect their opponent's attacks. More powerful variants of these attacks exist, such as Neji Hyuga's Eight Trigrams One Hundred Twenty-Eight Palms, and Hinata Hyuga's Protection of the Eight Trigrams Sixty-Four Palms. Only members of the main house are instructed in the usage of the these more advanced abilities, however, although Neji Hyuga bypassed this restriction by learning them on his own.

Hanabi Hyuga (日向ハナビ Hyūga Hanabi?) is the second daughter of Hiashi Hyuga, and thus Hinata's younger sister. Hanabi means "fireworks".

When Hiashi discusses Hinata with Kurenai, he disdainfully refers to Hinata as "even weaker than Hanabi, five years her junior," which implies that Hanabi showed more talent at that point. Hanabi seems very obedient and quiet, at least in the presence of her father.

Hiashi Hyuga (日向ヒアシ Hyūga Hiashi?) is the twin brother of Hizashi Hyuga, but was born first, making him a main house family member. Hiashi means "daytime" and "spreading of a fire".

Hiashi has two daughters, Hinata Hyuga, the elder, and Hanabi Hyuga, the younger. Hinata, being the elder daughter, is the heir, but Hiashi favors Hanabi over her because she clearly seems stronger. When Hinata became a Genin, he goes to the extreme of saying that she is useless, putting her life in Kurenai Yuhi's hands. He was also the one to put the cursed seal on his nephew, Neji Hyuga.

When Hiashi killed a shinobi from Kumogakure, who came under false pretenses of signing a peace treaty and was in fact attempting to kidnap Hinata to obtain the secret of the Byakugan, Kumogakure demanded that the body of Hiashi be delivered to them as compensation as directed in the terms of the treaty. Hiashi's brother, Hizashi, volunteered to be killed instead of Hiashi, thus saving his life. Hiashi for his part was absolutely opposed to the idea of his brother taking his place and leaving his young son alone, to which Hizashi responded by disabling him with one blow. Hizashi told his brother that he was not doing it because he was a branch house member, but because they were brothers. It was his way of going against his fate. Hiashi decided not to tell Hizashi's son that his father volunteered to die until he felt that Neji would be mentally ready to accept this over the much more comfortable belief that the main house was responsible for his death. This moment came after Neji's loss to Naruto Uzumaki in battle during the main tournament of the Chunin exam.

Hiashi took an active role during the invasion of Konoha, blasting away all hostile forces that dared approach, disabling many in one blow and wiping out an entire group with a massive Heavenly Spin. Hiashi then reminded the attacking ninja that the Hyuga were the strongest in Konoha. The ninja present were not convinced that one ninja could stop them beforehand.

During the time between the Chunin exam and Sasuke Uchiha leaving the village, Hiashi seems to have realized that the family bond that should be keeping the clan together had been falling apart. He apparently set his sights on mending it by training his nephew, Neji, which is a statement in and of itself as it breaks a Hyuga clan taboo of passing on secrets to branch house members.

It seems as if his relationship with Hinata is also steadily improving, even though she is still shy, and he is still pretty harsh with her in some points. During the Bikouchu filler arc, he tells her not to be a burden on her teammates and to stay out of their way. However, at the end of the arc he tells her to do her best.

[edit] Hinata Hyuga

Hinata Hyuga (日向ヒナタ Hyūga Hinata?) is the first daughter of Hiashi Hyuga and Hanabi Hyuga's older sister. Despite being the firstborn of the main branch, and the apparent heiress of the clan, Hinata has had this position taken from her by her father due to her lack of skill. This caused Hiashi to lose all interest in Hinata, even to the degree of not caring about her life. When Kurenai Yuhi informed Hiashi that Hinata would face mortal peril in missions, Hiashi claimed that he cared little for Hinata's fate. Her lack of self-confidence is derived from her father's harsh treatment of her. She eventually begins to regain her father's respect, however, as Hiashi's relationship with the rest of the clan begins to improve.

Hizashi Hyuga (日向ヒザシ Hyūga Hizashi?) was the father of Neji and the twin brother of Hiashi Hyuga, but was born into the world second, which made him a branch house member. The name "Hizashi" means "sunlight" or "rays of the sun" and is specifically used to describe sunlight strong enough to cause sunburn.

Being a branch house member and father to perhaps the most powerful Hyuga in the clan put a strain on his emotions, tearing him between caring for his brother and feeling anger at being the victim of a terrible injustice. As Neji and Hinata matured, the relationship between Hizashi and Hiashi became more tense and resentful, as it slowly dawned on Hizashi that his own son, even if he turned out to be the most powerful Hyuga of the next generation, would never lead the clan. Upon sensing Hizashi's hatred for the main house, Hiashi activated the cursed seal on Hizashi's forehead, paining him to no end and bringing him inches from death.

When Hiashi killed the head shinobi from Kumogakure - who came under false pretenses of signing a peace treaty, and was in fact attempting to kidnap Hinata to gain the secret of the Byakugan - Kumogakure demanded that the body of Hiashi be delivered to them as compensation. Hizashi volunteered to be killed instead of Hiashi, thus saving his brother's life and ending his own. He did it because he truly cared for his brother, and status didn't mean everything to him. It is revealed later that he left a final letter to Neji, and it told him to never give up on changing his destiny.

[edit] Neji Hyuga

Main article: Neji Hyuga

Neji Hyuga (日向ネジ Hyūga Neji?) is the son of Hizashi Hyuga and cousin to Hinata Hyuga. As a boy, Neji had to view his father being killed in the place of Hiashi Hyuga, which filled him with a burning hatred against the main house. He appears to be the most powerful of all the Hyuga of his generation, able to employ the Gentle Fist style at a higher level than Hinata, and has the ability to perform abilities thought to be solely limited to the main house. However, he believes in the inexorable nature of fate, as the main branch's ability to control him via the cursed seal forces him to fulfill his duties as a branch house member. After his fight with Naruto Uzumaki and a letter from Hizashi explaining the true circumstances behind his death, Neji begins to accept the flaws of his original views, and develops a better relationship with the main house.
