Hyperion sewage treatment plant

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Hyperion Wastewater Treatment plant is located in southwest Los Angeles, California next to Dockweiler State Beach on Santa Monica Bay. The largest such facility in the Los Angeles Metropolitan Area, Hyperion is operated by the Los Angeles Department of Public Works, Bureau of Sanitation.

The plant treats approximately 350-450 million gallons per day of raw sewage. The sewage undergoes both primary and secondary treatment. The plant also contains numerous odor control facilities to scrub the foul air emanating from the sewage. The Hyperion plant has been the subject of numerous lawsuits by Heal the Bay, an environmental advocacy group for Santa Monica Bay. As a result of the litigation, the effluent pumped into the bay by Hyperion is now far cleaner than in the 1970s. The secondary effluent is discharged into the ocean through a 12 foot diameter pipe at a distance of 5 miles out.
