Hylton Castle is a ruined castle in the north west of Sunderland. It is said to be haunted by the Cauld Lad of Hylton. In the 11th century, the castle was a fortified manor house, built by Henry Hilton. In the late 14th century, Sir William Hilton built the original stone castle, adding the gatehouse and a nearby chapel. During the 18th century, Baron John Hilton redesigned the gatehouse, adding two crenellated wings. Finally, a century later, William Briggs demolished the wings, leaving the castle gatehouse as it is seen today.

Hylton Castle is also the name of a large social housing estate, built to the west of the ruins from which it derives its name.

Time Team investigated the castle in 1995. It is managed by English Heritage.
