Hybrid animals
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A hybrid animal is an offspring of two different species of animal. Although most are created under human authority some, like the wolphin are found in the wild. A hybrid should not be confused with a chimera (such as the sheep-goat chimera, the geep).

[edit] Bird Hybrids
A bird hybrid is a bird that has two different species as parents. Gulls, ducks, geese, game birds, songbirds and domestic fowls have all been used to create bird hybrids.
[edit] Bovid Hybrids
A bovid hybrid is the result of interbreeding between two different members of the bovine family (Bovidae). Beefalo/Cattalo, the Dzo (or Yakow), and the Żubroń are common bovid hybrids.
[edit] Cama
The Cama is the result of breeding a female Llama and male Dromedary Camel via artificial insemination. The only known Cama goes by the name of Rama. Matings of a llama male to a Dromedary female have proven unsuccessful.
[edit] Canid Hybrids
A Canid hybrid is the result of interbreeding between two different members of the canine family (Canidae). Common hybrids are the Coydog/Dogote, Coywolf, Wolfdog, Huskal and various Dingo and Jackal hybrids (see canid hybrid). Several unconfirmed claims of dog/red fox hybrids (a hybrid commonly called a dox) have been reported, however due to their severe mismatch in chromosomes (dogs have 78, red foxes have 38) it is unlikely that there have been any true "doxes".
[edit] Elephant Hybrids
Hybrids between different animal genera are usually impossible, however there is one recorded case of a female Asian Elephant and a male African Bush Elephant hybrid born in 1978 named Motty (elephant classification at the time did not acknowledge the African Bush Elephant and the African Forest Elephant as separate species). The calf died of infection 12 days after being born.
There are unconfirmed rumors of three other hybrid elephants born in zoos or circuses, all are said to have been deformed and did not survive.
It is known that the African Bush Elephant and the African Forest Elephant (previously thought to be a subspecies of African Bush Elephant) can hybridise successfully.
[edit] Equid Hybrids
An equid hybrid is typically any combination of Horses, Donkeys and various Zebras. The most common equid hybrid is the mule/hinny. There are also various Zebra hybrids (collectively called Zebroid): zeedonk, zony, zorse.
[edit] Felid Hybrids
A felid hybrid is any hybrid of Felis (non-Panthera cats) and also hybrids between Felis and Panthera species.
[edit] Panthera Hybrids
There are a number of hybrids of Panthera species which are various combinations of lions, tigers, jaguars and leopards. They include the liger/tigon, leopon and lijagulep. See Panthera hybrid for more information.
[edit] Sheep-Goat Hybrids
A Sheep-goat hybrid is the hybrid offspring of a sheep and a goat. Because of their vast genetic differences (goats have 60 chromosomes, sheep have 54 chromosomes) and presumably them belonging to different genera (goats are genus Capra, sheep are genus Ovis), sheep-goat hybrids generally die as embryos.
The Toast of Botswana was an unusual case of a verified sheep-goat hybrid that was reported in Botswana in 2000.
A geep is a chimera, not a true hybrid.
[edit] Suid Hybrids
A suid hybrid typically refers to a domestic pig and wild boar hybrid (sometimes called an "Iron Age pig"). Various domestic pigs have been crossed with American wild hogs to produce compact, hairy hog-like hybrids.
[edit] Ursid Hybrids
An ursid hybrid is an animal with parents from two different species or subspecies of the Ursidae (bear) family. All the Ursinae species appear able to crossbreed.
[edit] Wolphin
A wolphin or wholphin is a rare hybrid, formed from a cross between a female bottlenose dolphin, and a male false killer whale. Although the word 'wolphin' is a folk portmanteau of whale and dolphin, since false killer whales are members of the family Delphinidae, that is, dolphins and not true whales, the wolphin is a kind of dolphin. They have been reported to exist in the wild.
[edit] Crocodilian Hybrids
Hybridization between the endemic Cuban Crocodile (Crocodilus rhombifer) and the widely distributed American Crocodile (Crocodilus acutus) is causing conservation problems for the former species as a threat to is genetic integrity.
