[edit] Origin and Etymology

The term husband refers to Middle English huseband, from Old English hsbnda, from Old Norse hsbndi (hs, house + bndi, bandi, householder, present participle of ba, to dwell)[1]

[edit] Christianity

In the Middle Ages and Early Modern European history, it was unusual to marry out of love,[citation needed] though it became an ideal in literature.[citation needed] However, a husband still had more opportunities in society.[citation needed] In these earlier times, he was supposed to protect and support not only his wife and children, but servants and animals of his domain.[citation needed] The father figure was awarded with much authority, which was denied to his wife.[citation needed]

Adultery as one of the crimes in a marriage had less consequences if committed by a man, due to the customs of Christianity.[citation needed]

[edit] Islam

In Islamic marital jurisprudence, husbands are considered protector of the household and his wives.[citation needed]

[edit] Husbandry

In biology, the term animal husbandry is used.
