Huron Central Railway
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Huron Central Railway is a Canadian railroad operating company owned by Genesee and Wyoming, which in 1997 leased the approximately 305 km long Canadian Pacific Railway branch between Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. It operates an east bound train in the morning and a west bound train in the evening, seven days a week. Coil steel manufactured by Algoma Steel in Sault Ste. Marie constitutes most of the freight, but pulpwood, chemicals used by the steel industry, slab steel, paper, and miscellaneous goods also figure in the trains. The company also serves a Domtar paper mill at Espanola via a short branchline. According to Genesse Wyoming's website (2006), HCRy handles 23,000 carloads a year. Because of the hilly grade profile, three or four orange, yellow and black EMD GP40s are the usual power assigned to keep the 40 to 60 car trains under control. The line parallels Highway 17 for much its length, making it easy to follow a train for photography.
