[edit] The name

The name (Norse Urðardalr and Hurðardalr) is an old district name. (The name of the church site is Gjøing.) The first element is the genitive case of a disappered rivername (later called Gjøingelva 'Gjøing river'), probably *Urð 'stony river' (from urð f 'scree'). (The sideform Hurðardalr has an addition of a false /h/.) The last element is dalr m 'valley, dale'.

Until 1918 the name was written "Hurdalen".

[edit] Coat-of-arms

The coat-of-arms is from modern times (1988). It shows a cone of spruce.
