Hunky and Spunky is a seven minute 1938 animated short film starring a mother donkey and her son. It is part of the Color Classics series produced by Fleischer Studios.
[edit] Synopsis
Hunky is a mother donkey and Spunky is her young son. This story takes place in the old west, where a prospector attempts to make Spunky into his pack animal. This film was nominated for best Short Subject (Cartoons) in the 1939 Academy Awards.
The July 1st, 1938 publication of Film Daily said the short had "funny new characters," and gave it the following synopsis: "Introducing two new cartoon characters, Spunky and Hunky, a little mule and its mamma. Done in technicolor, the mules are wandering over the desert country out west. They talk to each other in donkey language, showing their teeth and making very funny noises, which will amuse the kids. An old prospector captures little Spunky, and makes him carry his heavy pack. Ma Hunky comes to the rescue and kicks the prospector right through his own shack on top of the mountain, and then kicks the shack over to the top of another mountain. Then the two mules proceed happily on their journey to the tune of a western song. A Max Fleischer cartoon." (Film Daily, Vol. 74, No. 1, p. 4)
Fleischer Studios went on to produce six more Color Classics cartoons featuring Hunky and Spunky.
