Huminity
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Founded in early 2003 and launched in December 2003, Huminity Social Networking Chat is a free social networking software that was the first to combine Instant Messaging with Social Networking and Weblogs, preceding Microsoft’s planned Wallop application to the market by several years. Huminity’s network has grown to over 1 Million people from all over the world, and its main attraction is its graphical visualization of connections between people and the ability to search path from any person to any other person.
Being a social networking software, it is different than the many websites in this category by features and focus. While social networking websites focused primarily on user generated content, Huminity focused on user generated contact lists. Users could then navigate a map of connections, interconnect via chat with other users, or send email messages.
Today, Huminity is an open, general purpose social networking software that blends both software and web-based features like chat, blogs, e-cards, forums, visual maps of connections, search path between people, and more. While it relied on a network viral effect of users inviting their friends as its means of growth, it has not yet reached the tipping-point required for becoming a massively used software.
