The Human Rights Protection Party (HRPP) is the current governing party of Samoa, having ruled since 1982 except for one term between 1985 - 1988. Its best known figure was former Prime Minister Tofilau Eti Alesana, who died in 1999. The party's current leader is Prime Minister Tuila'epa Sailele Malielegaoi.
In the legislative elections of 4 March 2001, the party won 45.1 % of popular votes and 23 out of 49 seats. During the most recent elections on 2 April 2006, they won 35 of the 49 seats.
