The Human Design System, is a unique personality mapping technique that blends ancient esoteric systems — Eastern and Western astrology, the Kabbalah, the Chinese I Ching, the Hindu Chakra system — with modern concepts about neutrinos and genetics.
Any student of cultural anthropology or psychology will find much of the material familiar. For example, Human Design categorizes human behaviors into a few major types such as Integration, Tribal, Individual, and Collective. The attributes associated with those classes are similar to the Group Grid classes of cultural anthropologist Mary Douglas which she labeled Isolates, Individualists, Hierachical and Egalitarian.
A particularly dominant theme in Human Design is ‘’conditioning’’ which describes how the “world” (particularly other people) has a powerful impact on each person’s behavior. Anyone familiar with Behaviorism and Pavlov and B. F. Skinner, will recognize the parallels.

The Human Design System was given form by Ra Uru Hu. Born Alan (Robert) Krakower in Montreal, Canada April 9, 1948, the son of wealthy parents, he received a good education and went on to work as an entrepreneur, a magazine publisher, an advertising executive and media producer. He disappeared in 1983 and re-emerged as Ra on the Island of Ibiza.
According to Ra, while he was living on Ibiza, a small island in the Mediterranean Sea, he was bombarded non-stop — for eight days and nights from January 3 to January 11, 1987 — with information about the reality of the human species by the "Voice" of some vast intelligence. The "Voice" referred to an anticipated subspecies of humans as ‘raves’ and its unrelenting onslaught of information provided Ra with detailed and scientific knowledge of the mechanical nature of the universe and the foundation of Human Design.
Ra describes himself as a skeptic with a background in physics. He had no belief in things of a mystical bent. He has often said that he resented the intrusion into his life of this "Voice". But the experience was so shocking and so profound that he was unable to simply set it aside and get back to his life.

Familiar though the material may be, its organization and integration with the ancient traditions provides a fascinating and profound exposition on human behavior. In many ways Human Design is one of the best compendiums of human behavior that currently exists. And, unlike so many systems that describe human behavior, Human Design is completely objective and non-judgmental.
The system is multi-layered, meaning that whatever basic perceptual model you employ, Human Design can be viewed via that model. If spirituality is your focus, then the system fits in quite well. If your preferred model is more scientific, the system fits in there equally well.
One of the most outstanding characteristics of the system is the density and granularity of the bodygraph component itself. Anyone who has learned the language and symbols of the system can extract a lot of information from a seemingly simple image. The information is both broad in its scope and extremely detailed, so a trained analyst can move easily between a macro and micro view of a person’s behavioral strategies — both the genetically wired ones and those which have been learned.

The process of learning Human Design is still cumbersome. Typically one begins by learning about oneself by having a “reading” from a licensed analyst. Those who resonate with the information provided in the reading typically will start taking classes. However, you can start by studying material that’s being sold on the internet.
The HD community provides a well-regulated licensing program to ensure a level of competence in those who represent themselves as licensed analysts. Ra Uru Hu has established an educational program, which is conducted by sanctioned national organizations throught the world. There are national organizations in The United States (Human Design America), The United Kingdom (Human Design UK), Spain (Human Design Hispania), Germany/Austria (Human Design System Info) , Ukraine (Human Design Ukraine), Italy (Human Design Italia), Australia (Human Design Australia), Japan (Human Design Japan), Greece/Cyprus (Human Design Hellas), France (Design Humain France), and Brazil (Human Design Brasil).
There is also an online educational branch run by Human Design Online Inc at HumanDesign.com. They hold the rights and responsibilities to providing online education in the Human Design System.

The process of mastering Human Design actually takes quite a long time. There is a tremendous amount of information to learn and memorize. In general, the learning curve progresses in this manner:
- objectively identifying specific behavioral strategies within yourself.
- objectively identifying specific behavioral strategies within another person.
- objectively identifying specific behavioral strategies between yourself and another person.
- objectively identifying specific behavioral strategies within a group.
