Hugh MacDonald (born April 28, 1985 in Belleville, New Jersey) is an American soccer defender for Red Bull New York of Major League Soccer.
MacDonald grew up in Kearny, New Jersey and attended Kearny High School, which produced former United States internationals including John Harkes, Tony Meola and Tab Ramos. He led Kearny to the state championship game as a junior in 2001, and won the championship as a senior in 2002.
MacDonald spent two years at Virginia Commonwealth University, where he helped the team to the Colonial Athletic Association championship both years, 2003 and 2004. He transferred to Monmouth University, where he won the Northeast Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 2005 and 2006, and led Monmouth to its first ever NCAA Men's Soccer Championship appearance.
MacDonald was not drafted in the MLS SuperDraft or the Supplemental Draft in January 2007, and signed with Red Bull New York as a free agent in March 2007 after spending the preseason with the club.
